Will a 14 inch T42 screen work in a T61? Both are SXGA+.

You need to solder a EDID chip (the same as the SPD chip from every memory modules) and flash it using PowerStrip.
Not very difficult if you have a basic soldering skill and 2-3 hours of free time. Otherwise, it is better to look for a second hand T6x LCD.

Rarely, a T4x had or received a replacement LCD that already had the EDID chip. Rarely.
