Hey guys!
Yesterday my t60 just worked fine. For the night i just left it turned on, and in the morning i turned it off. About a few hours later i tried to boot it up, but it wont turn on. I saw that the external power indicator under the screen is not light. When I try to reconnect the adaptor the battery lamp lights for a second, then nothing. After i've seen this, i connected the battery to the computer. When it is installed the computer starts up without any problem. Once it is running when i connect the adaptor, the lamp is still blank, but in windows on the tray i see that the battery is charging, and the external power source is connected. I was courius about this, so i removed the battery when the computer was running (i never do things like this except this time) and the computer continued working without a problem. I shutted it down again, and tried to boot up without the battery and still nothing.
What could be the problem?
( I tried to boot up using a docking station too, but it lead to the same results)
UPDATES:
some weird things happening. I have an IBM T61 at home too, so I plugged in its 90W adapter into the T60....the notebook starts without any problem, runs fine, but the external power, and the letter "z" in a circle lights under the screen are not working...the others are fine. The T60 has a 65W adapter, when using that the problem is still there.....

What I would do is remove the power and battery (optionally you can remove the cmos battery too), the cycle the power button 10 times, holding a few seconds each time, then finally hold it for about 30 seconds. Now replace the battery/s and ac adapter and try the laptop. If nothing changed, then replace your AC adapter. If you continue to have problems you may need a new system board.
I have 90w adapters if you need one, but the T61 uses the same model. If you can't get them locally I have them for $16 (usd) in excellent condtion or $25 for brand new originals as shipped with new laptop (not the lenovo replacements which seem to be rebranded generics)

Nope....the adapter is fine. I tried on the T61 and it works....I have no idea what the hell is wrong with this computer....

Hello.
Sorry to hear about your difficulties. I know it can be frustrating. I have a T400 which exhibits the same pattern of behavior. The lack of "Z" lighting up, only starting with a battery, etc. After playing around with it a bit I came to the conclusion that the DC jack and entire power circuitry is obviously failing. I remember the problem first manifested when I had it plugged in, with a battery. I think I removed the battery (to check something or note something, since I sell batteries), and after an hour or so (without the battery), it suddenly cut off. Then I tried it with a battery and observed all the stuff you're describing. I think it still boots up at this point, but one or two times didn't want to boot at all. Haven't checked it lately- it's sitting in a box somewhere...
I think the problem described here is actually related:
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=104121 It seems the laptop keeps trying to go back and forth between AC and battery power

How good are you with a soldering iron, measuring wattage, etc. ? This sounds like capacitor/ resistor type stuff
Hopefully some of these type chaps who specialize in this type problem will come along shortly and give you a helpful type suggestion.
Best wishes,
Daniel.

Hello everyone!
Today I just found out what was the problem with my thinkpad. Now it works like a charm

The problem wasn't the adapter, the mobo, not even the vga. I remembered a dark spot on the lover right corner of my screen, and I saw on this forum in a topic that could mean Inverter failure. I put my screen into another T60, with a totally working mobo, and i got the same results. My first guess vas the inverter, i changed it and it produced the same semptomps. So there was only one thing left i could change, and it was the LCD cable....yes the LCD cable:D
After changing that sh¤t my notebook as good as new....
So if you have problems like mine, try this...maybe it'll help you too
