Hello all
This is a picture of nvidia chip on my T61 with date code 08/08
http://i865.photobucket.com/albums/ab21 ... 194847.png
I guess what I want to know is is this the new replacement chip or old chip that is likely to fail?
Some are saying that the replacement chip shoud be "741-A2" intead of "740-A2" like you see on my pic
I remember comparison picture of Nvidia chip somwhere is this forum but just can't find it...
I'm about to invest on parts and this will be the motherboard so I just want to make sure that
the Nvidia failure will be the last thing I should worry about
Thank you all!

Hate to tell you, but...
With the exorbitant amount of counterfeit nVidia chips that had flooded the market a while ago, there's really no such thing as a "safe" chip, unless you know the machine's history for a fact...or are getting it from a known trustworthy source.

oh great....
I finally get a 08/08 date code and now this....
I'm thinking I should just build on it and keep my eye open for another as a backup replacement.
Yes?
No?

Nothing special to brag about.
I originally bought this as a doner system I was looking for a doner system for T61 screws fan and some other non major parts. It was a usual system that you see from ebay (Missing HD, battery, AC adapter, no drive caddy, cracked screenetc..) as a "For Parts or not working" The seller did not know the spec of it and did not want to get bother checking the spec. I offered $40 shipped for it and he accepted.
Once I got it, the first thing I saw was that the date code was 08/08. Cracked it open and had T7500, Single 2GB RAM and "N" wireless card.
Since the system had a decent base parts for what my wife calls "What!?!? another laptop?" I figured get a screen assembly, battery and ac adapter, 64GB SSD, and I'm GOLDEN

That date code 0824 is typical of an 08/08 T61 board, so I'd say it's highly unlikely its a fake assuming you got it with the chassis including the bottom label and the serial matches the label.
I've seen the chip dates vary from 0824 to 0829, and 90% of them are 0825. I'm told some are 0823 as well, and even for some of the late productions 08/09 and 08/10 carry the same dates.
The chinese knock-offs usually are dated 10xx or 11xx, and are used chips pulled from slavaged laptops, cleaned up and re-etched. You can read more by doing a google search on "fake chips" and "china", and you'll see that even the US government was scammed into buying thousands of these chips even going through legitimate sources. Seems its hard to resist a cheap chip, even if your a USA defense contractor.
I'd say you have nothing to worry about if the first part of this is true.

Personally, I like my doner with a lot of white sauce, tomatoes and a pinch of hot sauce...you can keep the fan and the screws...

Sorry, couldn't resist adding some spice to your typo...
All jokes aside, now you've heard it from the undisputed guru of T61/p range: build on and sleep tight...

Yes. All the info from bottom of the laptop (Type # S/N ) matches with the info from BIOS. Thank you for your confirmation.

Is THAT A PICTURE OF GREEK GYRO?!?!?!?
oh.. how I miss good Gyro on a pita bread. In the LALA land that I'm in now, they cannot come close to the Gyro I used to eat when I lived in NYC!

"Doner" is a Turkish word for the item that Greeks call "Gyros"...
And yes...NYC and Brooklyn/Queens (as in Astoria) have some of the best ones I've ever eaten, apart from the originating countries...

I'll trade "Double Double" from In N Out for a good Gyros from Queens in a heartbeat!

BTW,
Had a good laugh when you called it "White Sauce"
I think the official name of that sauce is "Cucumber sauce"
At least that's what they called it at the place I used to go to in Queens

You've picked the wrong one to split the hairs with on the topic of Mediterranean foods...
The official name is "tzatziki" sauce...in Greek, that is.
Most food carts owner/operators will ask you whether you want "white", "hot" or both, though...

Got it!
Now you're on my list of people to ask about Mediterranean foods when Google goes out of business!

And I won't share your interests with a zillion other parties the way Google does either...

You're welcome, and you should get many years of use out of your T61.
Good Luck

From T61 HMM LCD FRU numbers WXGA+
220nit, LG-Display 42T0406
200nit LG-Display 42T0427
200nit LG-Display 42T0579
200nit, CMO 42T0453
200nit, Samsung 13N7108
200nit, Samsung 42T0412
200nit, Samsung 42T0583
I need to get LCD for my build. I'm guessing 220nit is the brightest and the best amongst what I can put in T61. I do like my screen to be bright. Can anyone tell me 20nit difference is noticeable or not?
Do I have any other choice for LCD other than what's listed above?
