T6500 + T61(p)

hello,
my T61p runs T9300 Penryn. I needed this CPU for another Thinkpad and I bought T6500, also Penryn, to replace T9300 with T6500. Unfortunately I can't even make it POST. It just spins a fan and stops.
Is it possible that T6500 is not supported even it is Penryn core like T9300?
thank you,
geos

Not supported by any stretch of imagination.
You would've been much better off with a cheap Merom such as T7300 if you wanted to save money.
Hopefully no damage to the board has occured.

thanks. no damage. after changing into T9300 it runs again.
where a list of supported CPUs for T61p can be found?
what is the source of the information that T6500 is not supported?
thank you,
geos

None of the T6xxx CPUs are supported.
Meroms: T7100/7300/7500/7700/7800
Penryns: T8100/8300 T9300/9500
You can also run X7800/7900/9000 if you're adventurous...
This is just off the top of my head and posted from my PDA hence no links...

thanks!
besides, is this a BIOS thing that just doesn't include code to support this CPU or some real physical differences between those two Socket P Penryns?
thank you,
geos

The BIOS microcode does not have information about newer Penryn (i.e. those for Montevina platform).
Personally, thank you very much for your experiment. Now it is clear that CPUs for Montevina platform can not run on T61
