tape required for screen bezel?

#1 Post by BKthink » Mon Jul 23, 2012 12:14 am

I disassembled my 14.1" T60 screen to incorporate a third antenna. Removing the bezel was quite the challenge, but I got it off intact. It was held down with some very sticky and very thin double-sided tape which did not survive the process. Should I try to incorporate tape when I reassemble, or just rely on the plastic clips? Panel replacement seems to be pretty common, so what do most folks do here?

BTW, I did manage to damage a diode on the inverter board by sliding the corner of credit card between the bezel and the cover. TuuS to the rescue with a rapid replacement in the mail!

Just buy some regular double-sided tape from an office supply outlet or Walmart, etc.
Cut the strip down to size.
It won't hold as good as the original, but does a good enough job.
(Or if you are too lazy, leave it out altogether).
Lovely day for a Guinness! (The Real Black Stuff)

I ended up using some "tape runner" I think it's called. A little roller contraption that conveniently lays down just a very thin layer of adhesive without the structural tape, so there is essentially no added thickness. Seemed to do the trick. I don't want to be accused of being lazy!

usually there is enough adhesive left behind that nothng more is needed when reassembling. I really don't like how they glue the thing together from the factory and like having much less adhesive when reassembling it. If it's an old system and the adhesive is dried out, then I'll use very small dabs of (3M brand) super weatherstrip adhesive. I will warn you that this stuff can be really messy and I'm not kidding when I say use only a little. Just the smallest drop every 3 inches or so is more then enough to hold it in place. Another good option is silicone RTV sealer. This is much better for high heat environments, but takes longer to fully set, so if you're using it allow it to set overnight.

ps. glad my inverter made it there quickly thanks to our friends at usps :)
