T60 randomly shutting down (w/PICTURES)

#1 Post by noetus » Wed Aug 01, 2012 5:21 pm

So I have a T60 that I use as a home server which randomly shuts down. Obviously for a server this is a Really Bad Thing, especially as I can't restart it if I'm not physically present - it doesn't shut down to reboot as it is set to in Windoze, it just shuts down period as if the power button had been long-pressed. The power button needs to be pressed to start it, and this is Very Bad.

I've been monitoring temperatures while this happens and it doesn't appear to be temperature related. On the last shutdown the various CPU/GPU temps (4 of them) were all around 70 degrees. Since I've run the temps up to the high 80s at times with no shutdown, it can't be temp related.

Any ideas on what I could do? I have noticed that the temp gauges can spike sometimes, so perhaps there are erroneous temp spikes being reported that are not representative but cause a shutdown - I wouldn't necessarily see them as my temp recording only records temp once every 60 seconds. It's the only thing I can think of.

I've attached the record of temps so you can see what the temps were like in the hours before the shutdown (which you can also see, as the machine goes offline then and temps are no longer recorded).

Can no-one help with this? I saw on another thread the suggestion it could be the battery, but swapping the battery for a different one didn't help.

My only thought would be to check the system logs and see if there's anything that points to a specific error / problem. If it's a matter of the motherboard simply deciding to power off due to a loose connection or a thermal issue that's not 'monitored' then that's going to be harder to pin down. If I'm not mistaken, there are thermal fuses on most, if not all, Thinkpad motherboards. Parts are similar to this: http://www.te.com/catalog/pn/en/RF1347-000

These are thermal fuses that automatically reset themselves once the power is removed and the fuse cools down a little bit. If this is the case, perhaps a laptop cooling pad could help or you could locate the T60 in a cooler environment and see if this helps with the shutdowns.

Thanks. In fact there are no Windows logs related to the shutdown at all - it appears from Windows perspective that the power goes off suddenly.
