T400 motherboard on the T61 chassis

Is it possible to fit a T400 motherboard on a T61 chassis? As they grow cheaper on eBay this is a interesting upgrade option since it uses DDR3 1066 MHz RAM and works with both 800MHZ and 1066MHZ Penryn core 2 duo. The reason I ask is because I have a T9900 processor on a SL410 which case is becoming very worn (it had a black mate finish all over its chassis outside but it is becoming shiny!!! So much for durability...) and don't wanna lose it. If possible I would like to buy the T400 mobo and fit it into my T61...

Thanks

It's not going to work. Period.

or you can run your CPU on the T61 it at much lower speed with this:

or you can try working out the FSB overclocking method of running 266MHz bus while fooling the chipset that it's still using 200MHz bus, but it's not easy, but will run the chip at its native speed with this:

good luck

Now as for you ajkula66, I don't see why the T400 mobo wouldn't work on the T61 since they are almost identical (except for the sata dvd-rom). The LCD connector is identical and on the very same place and so are all the other ones... If you search for the pictures of both mobos you will find they are almost identical... I've been able to upgrade T41's with T43's or even R52's mobos on the past with no sweat.

Why bother asking if you already know better than everyone else?

I've never tried to swap these boards, but I've worked inside both laptops and they are drastically different, so if it is possible, I'd be surprised.

Yes I guess you are right TuuS, after taking a closer look I saw many differences... Oh well... Never mind that... But thanks for the reply! As for you George, no need to be rude, after all we are here to exchange ideas and experiences...

Thanks

If you don't mind me being blunt, which is something that I'm well-known for...

You started a thread and asked a perfectly sensible and legitimate question.

Two members who have gutted out more than their fair share of ThinkPads (Neil and myself) have responded to it. Obviously, you were hoping to get a different answer. Perfectly human. Not necessarily realistic.

Then you proceeded to question the answer(s) provided to you based not on actual experience and/or data but on the pictures that you've observed on the web.

That course of action could be understood as rude as well.

Some of us have forgotten more about ThinkPads that most people will ever know.

Some of us hold daily jobs which don't always allow them to post lengthy answers to every single query asked on this forum, but we still try to save people from blowing money and spending time on projects that could never work by posting prompt and concise replies to their questions.

I could write a thesis in order to answer your original question. However, I don't feel that there's a need for taking that route.

If someone was willing to flip the bill for me doing it, that would be a whole another ballgame.

But just like everyone else around here, I'm a mere volunteer helping Bill keep this truly wonderful and unique forum alive and am ecstatic to do so.

There are folks both here and on the other forums that I participate in who occasionally feel the need to question how I know what I know.

And those who know better than to ask.

@Vonfeffer -- Sometimes just adding a smiley face makes all the difference -- so no grudges here :)
