T61P Power Manager refuses to charge non-Lenovo battery

Was installing drivers to get hot keys and bluetooth to work after loading Windows 7 Ultimate OS. Installed latest Power Manager. After reboot got the warning triangle complaining about a non-Lenovo battery. Have a 9 cell battery which has worked just fine for at least 6 months. In the past you simply selected the option to not report on battery status and that was it.
With the new Power Manager from the Lenovo site it now REFUSES to charge the battery with the AC adapter plugged in.
Don't need to spend $100+ for a $26 battery.
Uninstalled Power Manager and it started charging.
What is Lenovo up to. Understand that they have the same FEATURE which refuses to let you use a non-Lenovo battery in the current Thinkpads.
