Great sub forum, I want to stay

#1 Post by Bot13 » Wed Aug 15, 2012 1:20 pm

I have only seen the tip of the iceberg on this forum, and certainly intend to read more. Been restricted to the T2x due to my old system, and I must stay rkawakami has been a very selfless person in his efforts to help me. Very knowledgable and informative person who goes the extra mile.
So from what I have read the choice of systems to me are not "great" but would like to start the wheels turning. From the "####-### compatible with penryn" forum I found info on the follow systems:
T61 7661-KK3 s/n L3-DC184, mobo Mfg p/n 42X7351 FRU 0000000 has a vista COA but HDD size is not a match so I would count on the recovery partition matching, has been intact from dist.
T61 " " s/n L3-CX473, same mobo info Xp COA both have CPU FRU 42W7655 mfg date 08/04
T60 2007-66U s/n L3-8Y14G Mfg p/n 42T5525 FRU 42T0122 has XP COA, mfg date 07/02

The reason I mention COA, is having read Pirates of the Digital Millennium and though the recording industry has abused the system, I still respect intellectual property rights.
I have been running a T23 w/ SSD for the past 5yr, and enjoy it much. Look for forward to upgrading the HDD. No mention seems to be made of the difference between SLC and MLC tech. Intended to stick w/ SLC, though it is a little more pricey. Should the Middleton BIOS upgrade not go well, a nicer mobo would be in order for sure.
Any advice would be greatly appreciated, including but not limited to, low cost processor upgade, well suite SSD, or if I should spend the extra $50 and go w/ a R400. In the end I would much prefer to build my own system and the wealth of info on this forum far exceeds what I see on others.

I know, I couldn't believe it when I first landed here. I found the depth and breadth of knowledge astounding. Combined with the fact that members are keen to help, positive, and share knowledge so readily makes it a great place to hang out.

I found it reassuring that when I first started modding my thinkpads people didn't discourage it and actively tried to help. I get tired of the "It can't be done - and you're crazy" mentality that you so often get in response. Well, here it usually already "has been done" by someone, even if it is "crazy".

There's a fine line between genius and insanity :D
