Problem with a used T60

#1 Post by llamov » Tue Aug 21, 2012 1:55 pm

I bought my 64 year old wife, who is extremely technically challenged, a Thinkpad T60 from an Ebay seller. She wants to take a couple of college courses and will require the laptop.

It worked well at first, but has recently developed several software problems. I attempted to reload Windows XP Professional from the hard drive partition only to discover the machine did not have one.

Lenovo wants $45.00 for the recovery disk.

Anyone have any ideas where I might find one cheaper?

It's a T60 2613HCU with Windows XP Professional.

@ llamov - Option wise you could place a wanted advert here on the forum via the Marketplace Sub-Forum to see if a member has a set of restore CDs/DVDs or just a backup copy that they can provide you.

Second option to consider is looking into the downloading a copy of the ISO image for Windows XP (at least one with SP2 integrated for basic SATA support) via a torrent (best make sure it's a reliable & highly downloaded version) and then use to reinstall Windows XP onto the T60 TP.

Third option is to look into going down the Windows 7 route - your wife might be eligible for Windows 7 via her college but you would need to look into that further yourself to see if that's a viable option to consider.

That's just my tuppence worth for you to consider. :D

I can provide you with an XP setup disc and genuine COA from microsoft for $30 delivered to usa address ($20 if you don't mind a COA that is a bit tattered but readable). Send me a PM if interested.

I can also provide you with Vista if you'd like to upgrade, for the same cost.

@Scottyboy, XP sp2 or even sp3 doesn't support SATA, it has to be added to the disc or inserted from a floppy drive during install.

ps. I can provide an XP disc with SATA added, as well as Service pack 3 and all critical updates upto 2011

Really? Could have sworn it did...perhaps the ones I've been working with already have the SATA device drivers already added.
