Hello,
After installing clean win7 on my t61 and updating from windows and lenovo there are still 2 "others" unknown.
how can I find drivers? I do not know what they are.

Just compare the list of installed drivers to the hardware you know is in your machine, and figure out what is missing.

My guess would be the modem is almost certainly one of them. The other might be ethernet, wireless adapter, bluetooth, chipset, etc., just check the list and see what's missing.

If you have a 15.4" model it's equipped with Ricoh 5in1 card reader that win7 doesn't recognize. The solution is to get the Vista drivers from Lenovo, extract them but don't install it, then go to the items in device manager and update each driver manually, browse for the location where you extracted the drivers and it should find them. If you're using 64bit windows you will need to browse to the correct 64 bit subfolder on one of them or it will try to install 32bit and fail.

By the way, if you have another T61 model then this info is useless and we both wasted our time here, emphasizing the need to provide information when asking for help.... however it may help another member.

yes it is a 15.4'' !! and I shall do the vista thing and see how it goes.
Will the drivers be updated for the other "other" automatically?? 'cause I do not have the list of hardware and the list of drivers. How can I extract this?

got a setup file from lenovo for t61
it will install something if I click it. What do you measn by "extract"?

Let's actually identify these hardware first:

1. Go to Device Manager and double click on the unknown hardware.
2. Go to "Details" tab, choose "Hardware Ids" from the dropdown list.
3. In the "Value" box below, take the longest line (most likely the first) and post it here.

Do this for all unknown hardware.

I do not have hw id tab under details.
1st
on "general"-other devices, manu unknown, location pcibus 21 device 0 function 3
on "details"-base system device

Windows won't tell you anything useful doing this. That's why it's "unkown". I know I've been where the OP is. Unfortunately I forgot the driver(s) that I installed and the steps I took. It was 2 am.

Excellent. Both 1180:0843 and 1180:0592 are listed under Ricoh R5C843: Ricoh PC Card Controller with Media Card Interface and FireWire Controller on ThinkWiki. Therefore the Ricoh card reader driver (7kss55ww.exe) is exactly what you need.

1. Execute 7kss55ww.exe and follow the instructions. By default, the drivers will be extracted under C:\Drivers\WIN\4IN1.
2. Double click one of the unknown devices and check its "Hardware Ids". The one that says "dev_0843" is the SD/MMC device; the one with "dev_0592" is the MemoryStick device.
3. Switch to "Drivers" tab and click "Update Driver".
4. Choose "Browse my computer for driver software".
5. Put in the appropriate path for driver files.
For the SD/MMC device: If your Windows 7 installation is 32-bit, put in "C:\Drivers\WIN\4IN1\SDMMC\". If Windows is 64-bit, put in "C:\Drivers\WIN\4IN1\SDMMCx64\"
Similarly, for the MemoryStick device, put in "C:\Drivers\WIN\4IN1\MS\" for 32-bit Windows or "C:\Drivers\WIN\4IN1\MSx64\" for 64-bit Windows.
6. Continue through the update process.

You will be surprised.
As long as the hardware in question is actually working, it will report its correct Hardware ID to Windows. And you can identify any common hardware through its Hardware ID - specifically, the Vendor code and Device code - by simply Googling it. Try searching "1180 0843" and see it yourself.

I did a search, found somebody with same 2 missing driver, found a link to the drivers, installed and now all ok!!
During the installation I received a notice about "hacktool" which I allowed (foolish?). What is it?

Hacktool is a rootkit!
You probably downloaded that driver from some obscure website and now your laptop is infected, well done!

I tried the link, it is complicated. few programs did downloaded and run, others did not.
I used Microsoft Security Essentials that cleaned everything it found, inc the hacktool.
Hope this wil be the end of it...next time I shall be more clever.

Make sure you turn off system restore before you scan for malware. If you didn't turn off system restore before running Microsoft Security Essentials, then you should turn off system restore now and run Security Essentials again.

Also, just to be on the safe side, you can download Malwarebytes free from download.com. Run Malwarebytes and let it clean anything it finds. After your computer scans are clean, you can then turn system restore back on. Download.com is a safe site for downloading software. When you download your software choice, make sure you uncheck any extra toolbars or other free software added to your download. You only need malwarebytes, not google toolbar, etc.

Shall I delete previous sys restore point?

They will all automatically be deleted when you turn Restore off.
You should then boot into Safe Mode (keep pressing F8 at startup till you see the start menu) and delete all the files you find in C:\Windows\Prefetch,
as well as everything you find in C:\Documents and Settings\[your username]\Local Settings\Temp

@izzykatz -- follow RBS's instructions for safe-mode, prefetch, and temporary files -- then run your Microsoft Security Essentials and Malwarebytes while still in safe-mode, allowing them to clean any bad things they find -- Using the two different programs will give you the best chance of removing all malware. If, after running the scans in safe mode, malware is found and removed, it is always a good idea to reboot into safe-mode a second time and run the two scans again to make sure nothing else is found.

If no more bad stuff is found, then after you reboot, you can turn on system restore again and create a new restore point.

I did it all, now no malware of any kind is found and I think that we are clean.
again thanks for all the help.

Now a different issue:
The lid moves freely few degrees on its hinge. I think there is too much friction somewhere so the plastic part is wearing every time lid is opened and close. Probably one day hinge will break.
any cure for that?

From everything I read, that's pretty normal for the T61, especially the 15" models. I got a couple that are like this. Only way to really fix it is to replace the hinges......or learn to live with it. The 14" is not to bad in this regard. I'd contact TuuS and see what he can help you with.

Getting back to the original issue here, this is REALLY easy to do. I thought I was clear, but I'll explain.

The only drivers for the Ricoh 5in1 device that work on windows seven are the Vista drivers, download them, open the .exe and they will extract to your C drive. Don't bother running the setup, it won't work, just wait till they get extracted and make a note of the folder you extract them to.

Now go to device manager and click on each of the unknown devices, there should be 3 for the Ricoh device. Select "update driver" and browse to the location where the files were extracted earlier and let it search that folder.

If you're using 64bit win7 all will update except one will fail, the one that fails you simply need to do the search after pointing to one of the sub-folders that has "64" in it's name, indicating that it's the 64bit drivers. I believe there are two such folders but I don't recall which is the correct one, but that doesn't matter because only one will work, so if the first doesn't, try the second.

This whole procedure takes about as long as it took me to type this reply and there is no need to do any research or identify the hardware, this is a well known issue and the fix is simple.

Any help on the second issue of the lid moving freely on the hinges?

Only remedy is to replace the hinges.

Agreed, and don't expect the new hinges to last long either. Basically it's a design flaw. The hinges rarely break or wear out, but if you open and close the lid often you can expect the play to develop in less then a year of moderate use. I've been planning on experimenting on a pair of loose hinges to see if I could find a way to tighten them up, but I doubt I'll ever get to that project considering the hinges aren't that expensive and any solution devised will surely be more work then installing new hinges.

You can probably find hinges for sale right here in the "Market Place" section of our forum. Likely someone near you will have some.

OLD thread, so sorry for the bump

But did a fresh/clean install of Windows 7 on a T61 15.4 machine and ran into the same issue as the OP, but just wanted to say what Twistero (and later Tuus) posted is the exact fix for this. Follow their instructions and your golden.

Since the (easy) wind breaker bumped it, I'll join in.

This same issue has been bugging me for a while on a couple 15" WS T61 I got from TuuS. There is some good info here, and getting the 7kss55ww file, either zipped or exe works fine. There are similar threads in the HP forum for one of their lines. Seems the mfrs didn't want to help us win7 adopters out anywhere. Any for T61s. for a 64 bit install they both end up in:

C:\drivers\WIN\4IN1_W7\83x64 .

There is no SDMMC or MS directory in my parent directory under C:\Drivers, just the 83x64 one, but both 64bit .sys drivers are there. I did the SD card reader first and then the mem stick and it took less than a minute.

The hardest part was finding the blasted 7kss55ww file in the first place. Every old ibm.com (listed in several old threads here on tpforums) link dumped me into a lenovo support site that refuses to recognize my machine type-model number (6463-Y64). Another (lenovo) link to a page meant for T430 series doesn't seem to work:

It's the 2nd from the top, I clicked download and then on the next screen (these guys NEVER make it easy) I used the small (again never easy) download from lenovo, button and Then (yup) I still had to enter my email addr, but at least I got the needed file (with no hacktool nonsense in it). There's always the spam button for the resulting barrage of emails.

Next time I'll use mailinator.com

If anyone has a direct lenovo link or a clear way to it, others might appreciate it.


Now I just have to figure out the ms teredo tunneling adapter cannot start code 10 error. That might just be a one entry registry update.
