T61p died, looking for replacement motherboard
T61p died, looking for replacement motherboard
My wife and I had been very happy with our T61p for the last four years not knowing that it was a ticking time bomb waiting to give us the 3 beeps of Nvidia death. Although it's been all over the world it still looks great and I hate to give up on it, especially after upgrading the hard drive and replacing the CD drive a year ago.
Any recommendations on where to get a replacement motherboard? I would obviously like to get away from the nvidia chip set unless it's a post 08/08 board, but would like to continue to be able to have 1920x1200 resolution if possible (do the Intel graphics support it?).
6460-67u - 08/07
T7500(2.2GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1920x1200 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro FX 570M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn, Bluetooth, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, Fingerprint reader, 6c Li-Ion, WinVista Ultimate
Any advice is welcome, but I will not be baking it.
Thanks
Matt

Re: T61p died, looking for replacement motherboard
Welcome to the forum!
A board with Intel graphics will run WUXGA LCD just fine.
I'd suggest posting a WTB (want to buy) ad in the forum's Marketplace. Someone will come to your rescue.
Good luck.

Re: T61p died, looking for replacement motherboard
Hello,
My name is Nicolas, I'm a new member of the forum and I'm writing from France (I apologize in advance for my bad English
).
Two days ago, my lovely T61p (6457-7WU | 08/06) died in one second, nVidia is not my friend.
BUT, after G40, T43, X41, and T60 (all sold to buy next one, always in second hand), I'm really really in love with my T61p, which is, for my every day needs, an excellent computer.
I saw many offers on eBay for same models in Europe, for about 250 Euros, but I have a question and no answer.
At your opinion, and tennernie said it perfectly with 'ticking time bomb', is it dangerous to buy a refurbished T61p now ? Is it really a waste of money. I've read many forums and posters which recommend to install an Intel graphic motherboard but I also read that this nVidia problem is not a fatality (1 or 2% of chips).
I really don't know what to do. My heart says 'buy it now', my brain says 'be careful'.
What kind of more recent ThinkPad to replace mine ? Of course, my budget is low
One thing I appreciated with my T61p / nVidia is I was able to play small 3D games time to time (42 years old but Settlers 2 fan ! ).
Could you please give me external point of view / advices / recommendations ?
I thank you in advance.
Best regards,
Nicolas

Re: T61p died, looking for replacement motherboard
Welcome to the Forum!
Sorry to hear your T61p died. I would follow Ajkula's advice and buy an Intel board. I find 250€ too much for a model that can dye soon (again). For playing Settlers 2 an Intel board will do fine
P.S.: I see you're model has an WUXGA screen, are you sure the 250€ offers are for the same screen resolution?

Re: T61p died, looking for replacement motherboard
Be very careful if you're thinking of buying another nVidia board or laptop, there are many who sell them after applying improper repairs. If you want to replace your nVidia with an Intel board I may be able to help, they aren't very common for the 15.4" models but I can get them.

Thank you very much for your answers
@Tasurinchi :
Thank you for your answer. Yes there are many T61p WUXGA (6457-5GG) in Germany. Most came from offices. I work in France (as independant webmaster) for a company who recycle those kind of IBM computer (from ThinkPad to AS400). Unfortunately, they have expensive prices (because they give waranties) so they can't help me this time
. Auctions are never higher than 200 Euros. Best type than mine, they have 9 cells battery (OK certainly dead) and Turbo Memory. I don't know if they are in good shape but mine is so I can easily make 1 with 2. Screen resolution is not really a problem since I have a WUXGA screen (in spare parts now
) and finally WSXGA+ is also an excellent resolution for a 15,4 inches screen.
@TuuS
Thank you for your message. I saw you helped many people with Intel cards and it's very kind of you. To be honest I'm a little afraid with Intel graphics on ThinkPad. I bought a second hand X300 to my wife 2 years ago (excellent second hand bargain, I'm on it right now) and it has a GM965. Settlers 2 10th Anniversary (which is an old game) even does not launch. 3D performances are really poor. OK I don't play every day but this was a great thing on T61p, you can work quickly (good CPU power) and it launches everything in 3D (good OpenGL power). I had 5.9 indice on Win 7 for graphics. I didn't find any informations for motherboards for T61p with Intel graphics. Lenovo drivers list does not include a driver. Could you please tell me more about those motherboards ? And the cost including shipping to France ? thank you very much TuuS.
