I am trying to replace my existing HD with a SSD. Is there a particular brand I need to buy and do I need any adapters to connect the SSD ?

No to both questions.

Just make sure to buy a proper size unit...what laptop are we discussing here anyway?

That will of course depend on which ThinkPad you have, but you offered not information about that.

Yes, the SATA SSD will fit into your existing HDD caddy. You only need a #1 Philips screwdriver and you are done. Look at this thread: http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.ph ... 59#p687359

Is there a maximum capacity I need to worry about and any particular brand of SSD is recommended to buy . So if I dont need any special adapter for SSD it should be plug in play and windows should install without any issues ..
