Total upgrade of a T60

#1 Post by jknight770 » Sun Sep 16, 2012 9:27 am

I'd like to upgrade my T60. I've read about upgrades to a T61 motherboard which seems promising. But it'd like to completely modernize the guts of it.

The only important features of my T60 that I want to keep are the screen (4:3!) and keyboard. Everything else I'd be happy to upgrade. The matte 4:3 screen is a beauty I can't seem to find elsewhere and I prefer it even over my anti-glare Macbook pro.

Is it possible to replace the motherboard with some brand new one -- who knows, a T430 or even some non-IBM motherboard -- and make it work with the keyboard and LCD ?

A T61 board is as good as it gets, but don't put down the T61, it's way beyond what you can do with a T60 board, the ram limit alone goes from 3gb to 8gb, the max harddrive speed from 1.5 to 3.0gb/s, max processor speed from 2.33ghz to 2.8ghz and the max L2 cache from 4mb to 6mb. One of these units with an SSD iwill impress anyone.

Oooo. This sounds fun.

How simple is the swap of one for the other?

Edit:

Some good information here and here:

Swapping bare boards should be done IMO only if you're performing it on a 15" T60/p frame with a FlexView screen.

For all other purposes, getting a 14" (4:3) T61 and maxing it out makes a lot more sense in my book.

It's a T60, 2007 76U which has a screen of "15" SXGA+ 1400x1050 (Matte) 1 CCFL" (FRU #42T0325)

Now that IS nice.

Yep, throw a T61 board in there and call it a day. Plenty of info on "how to" on this forum.

Happy upgrading.
