Great fan replacement for R61 15.4" Widescreen

#1 Post by dadarkda » Thu Sep 27, 2012 11:02 am

I'm looking for a really good fan replacement for a R61 15.4" widescreen. It's got a quiet grating sound as it spins, and the area near the exhaust is very hot. Haven't bothered installing an OS yet; it seems pretty obvious this thing's way too hot. Hopefully it doesn't have a history of blackouts, etc. as it's got the NVIDIA GPU in it.

I don't want to risk installing something too pricey and have the GPU fail me soon after, and I'm wondering if anyone's had good experiences with any type of third party fan. The Chinese Hong Kong fans on eBay and Amazon seem to get mixed reviews. Can I use a T61 15.4" widescreen fan in lieu of an R61 equivalent?

The 15.4" R61 uses a much different fan from the T61. I suggest you try cleaning it out and use some arctic silver #5 thermal paste and see how that goes, if it's still noisy after cleaning then get a new fan.

Regarding the nVidia chip, what is the date on the bottom of the unit?
