the copper contacts of the ethrnet port of my T61 are oxidized...

Anyone has experience of using successfully a PCMCIA Ethernet card with Linux on the T61?

(i bought an edimax with realtek chip, but i couldn't make it work under linux..)

Use a small sharp knife (or nail file) and gently scrape the 6 contacts clean so they are 'shiny' again.
You only need to do the upper part of the contacts (the part that you see when looking into that port).
Make sure the laptop is OFF when you do this!

These aren't gold plated?

Monster cable makes a solution for speaker wires (or they did) to clean the ends of the copper speaker wires and another solution (sold in a set if i remember correctly) to help preserve the contacts. you try that as well. It comes in two small bottles. In 25 years i haven even used 1/4 of either bottle.

As RBS indicated, make sure it is OFF and the battery is out. :thumbs-UP:

guys,
thanks for the replies!

i had already tried scraping the surface of the contacts, and it worked for a while, but now the oxidation is back... but applying a solution to preserve them is a good idea!
i ll look into it!
