t61 runs cool 65 degrees for a while, then CPU starts shooting up to 80, 90, 100 - then machine suddenly shuts down instantly and won't restart til i unplug it. no other symptoms, no error messages.

i put a new fan, clean heatsink, a fairly new solid state drive, fairly new ram memory. i don't see why it would just start heating up like that.

oh well, seems it was not showing the right temps because it shuts off even if it feels cool.

latest is, it wouldn't start and stopped showing even the power light. then i took out the battery and the light came back on and it started again! too strange. i expect it will shut down again soon.

The cpu temp shooting up may be a malfunctioning thermal sensor. Do you have a spare CPU to test?

omg the symptoms look like this article, which says unplug, remove battery and hold down power button 30 seconds to release "static" !

that would be a nice cheap trick although i would be disappointed in the company product

i will report back later
