T61p Mobo fail...can I replace with T60 mobo?

#1 Post by er4a » Sat Nov 03, 2012 4:40 pm

Hello all,

I am in a bit of a bind here and running out of time so I thought I would ask the forum for some advice. My friend and I both own thinkpads, her a T61p, mine a T60. Our screen sizes are different. This afternoon, she tried to turn on her laptop and the screen would not light up. Did some looking around online, called lenovo. I am pretty sure the motherboard is the problem. We tried the "power button 10x" trick but didnt work.

We had the idea to use my T60 motherboard in her T61P system...is this even possible? Were working on a project together, on her laptop, and we are trying to salvage it even if it means not being able to use my T60. I would send it in but her warranty expired almost 3 months ago, and lenovo will not let us renew it. Any ideas?? We are kind of up the creek on this one, because we stupidly did not back up the work we had done on her T61P before it died. I am resisting the urge to "bake" the motherboard in the kitchen oven, although that was one option we found online. any help would be appreciated...apologize for any newbie errors!

Ben, I replied to your message on the Lenovo forum and I can get you a board for your system, but to answer your question, it is possible to use a T60 board from a 15.4" T60 in a 15.4" T61, but you'll need to swap more then just the board and it really wouldn't be something I'd recomment. You can also swap a T60 14.1" or 15.0" board into a T61 14.1", but likewise you'll need to swap more parts and also do some cutting of the frame and you'd lose your modem.

Your best option is a board with Intel graphics. If this is an urgent matter go check your private messages on lenovo forum and reply with the info and I'll get you a price.

Ben,

You can try swapping hard drives if they are both running the same OS. I just did this with a dead T60 and put the hardrive in a T61. They were both running W7 and it booted just fine after automatically finding the correct drivers. She is running the T61 with her drive until I can replace the T60 board.

You can also use a device like this to access the drive through a usb port.

Good luck,
