T61 power brick problem

#1 Post by MacAoidh » Thu Nov 29, 2012 9:39 am

So my power brick (65w 20v FRU P/N: 93P5026) popped on Sunday night, i bought a new one form Amazon model 42T4428 (90w 20v FRU P/N: 42T4429) which i received an hour or so ago BUT it doesn't seem to be working??? No power light and no charging signal on screen when switched on. Is this because i've went from 65w to 90w ? As i was sure they were interchangable or have i maybe done something to the motherboard when the brick popped BUT to be honest i can't really remember if it was plugged in at the time??? Is there a way of checking??? I don't even know anyone close by with a TP or i'd just go and borrow there brick

OR is it just a dud brick

Kind regards

Can you get hold of a multitester to check there is voltage out of the adapters?

Aside from that if two adapters don't work it looks like it's the Thinkpad.

Any charge left in the battery?

Aside from that you could check that all the connexions are plugged together firmly and make sure there is power out of the mains socket.

More likely you blew a fuse on the mobo and the 'old' brick is still OK.
It takes quite a bit to incapacitate such a power brick.

The Original brick is melted

I've been in touch with the suppler of the replacement from Amazon and he has sent out another, if this doesn't work i'm guessing it'll be the mobo. I have power in the battery, about 25%. There is definately power from the mains socket also.
Where do i look to find out if it's a mobo fuse? Where the adapter plugs into the mobo inside the TP? As i said i can't really remember IF the brick was plugged into the TP when it popped, which i'm obviously hoping it wasn't and all this is nothing but a faulty mickey mouse eared brick

Kind regards

Alternate theory - could there have been a short in the power connector on the thinkpad? That could have caused the old brick to work overtime until the short burned open, and both new and old bricks may still be working. Try taking off the keyboard and palmrest/bezel and see if you can get a look at the power plug or it's wires. Checking for voltage out of the power bricks would also support or eliminate this theory..

Rather than buy a knockoff from Amazon, why don't you get a proper 90W Lenovo AC adapter?
Amazon's (knockoff) replacement is very likely to also blow...

Just back with a new Rx from the optometrist, I am scrutinizing the thread, but I still can't see where the OP mentioned a knockoff?

Myself, I've had no problems with knockoff adapters, while my OEM bricks have fried, or more commonly, frayed and fried at the barrel connector.
That probably speaks to the aging and ordinary wear of the OEM bricks, not their quality of manufacture.

My advice: buy an extra brick in advance of need and keep it on the shelf. They're generally available here for less than $20, no need to run to Best Buy for a $60 "universal" adapter.

FWIW I got a genuine (North American) 90w adapter from Play a few months ago for perhaps £15 or maybe a bit less.

But that might be a bit premature; it's quite likely the current adapter is OK, so time to get out the voltmeter.

You might want to pull the heatsink from this laptop, the power jack has wires that run right next to the heatsink and then plug into the system board and I've seen at least one system where they shorted on the heatsink and caused damage to the AC adapter. Take a good close look at the wires, if you can see any insulation damaged or burn marks you will have found the problem. In this case it's a very cheap part, but the short could have caused damage to the system board, there wouldn't be any way to tell until the part is replaced.

However there is no reason to assume you have this problem, it's not common, but it would be something I would check. You might even be able to see the wires well enough by removing the keyboard and bezel. Also if you have a good sense of smell, see if there is any burning odors coming from the laptop.

As i said i cannot even mind if the TP was plugged in at the time when the switches tripped??? (had been drinking) I don't think the old brick is working or will be very surprised if it is as it is pretty melted and warped.

I don't own a voltmeter.

I'll just wait to get the new brick, should be tomorrow, and if it doesn't work i'll pull the TP apart again and consider replacing the ac connector plug, just done it there (not replaced the plug) and the internals don't seem to be damaged and there is no melted plastic smells anywhere.

What was the make/model of that melted PSU, was it original IBM/Lenovo?
