T60 boots to splash screen, safe mode scree, blue w/words

Morning folks.

My regular T60 (A unit) was randomly shutting down and I had redone the artic silver under the fan but no improvement so I decided to swap the hard drive with my more reliable T60 (B unit). The B unit now had the A's drive and booted fine, the B unit went to splash screen, safe mode screen and then the blue screen with white words about an unexpected exception, so I decided to get this another motherboard. I installed the replacement mobo and exactly the same thing. I checked the drive with the utility in the bios and it tested fine. I tried to reinstall the operating system and in cranks thru the R&R disk for a few minutes and then says there is an error it can't handle. Looking for ideas to try next, any help out there?

Thanks
burns

Presuming you're running XP.

Press F1 to enter BIOS on boot>Configuration>SATA> set it to "compatibility" press F10 to save and exit.

AJK, YOU DA MAN, worked perfect, thanks again. When you disconnect the CMOS battery does it default to the other mode? or how did it switch modes?
