T60 with Intel 330 SSD Lag

#1 Post by codyrock2001 » Thu Jan 24, 2013 9:43 pm

I've noticed that after changing the original hard drive in my t60 with a 180GB Intel 330 SSD it works great but once and a while the computer goes into a lock for a few minutes if a video or music is playing it continues to play, locked video though and I have nothing sometimes web browser will disappear for a minute and the hard drive indicator stays solid. After its done with its episode it works great again. I was wondering if anyone else has had this happen?

Yes, I did:

I returned the Intel SSD and replaced it with a cheaper Kingston - everything is working flawlessly for 4 months now, and even better with Win8 :D

This is a known issue in Windows 7, not only on ThinkPads but many other laptops. I had this on my T61 with Intel 330 180GB and a brand new Win7 Ultimate SP1 install. Updates of the drivers helped but did not eliminate these stalls. For reference, the driver version for Intel ICH8M-E/M SATA AHCI Controller I have in Win7 SP1 is 9.6.0.1014.

The fix is to disable power management on the SATA port:

I edited the registry manually and only for Port0. Make sure you do not re-enable it through Intel SSD Toolbox.

Bottom line, the drive is rock solid and very fast. The WinSAT HDD index is 7.1 out of 7.9 possible.

This issue as mentioned in my thread above caused me to change to another brand. I find it quite unacceptable, at a leading supplier like Intel distributes a product to nomal consumers that requires system fixes in the registry.
And at least here, no support whatsoever apart from the possibility from my distributor to try another product/brand.

That's NOT a W7 issue.

I've been running W7 on a variety of ThinkPads/SSDs for quite some time now and have *never* bumped into it.

That being said, I stay away from *any* SSD with a SandBox controller.

The web is saturated with complaints from owners of SF-based SSDs that mirror hhmcsv's experience...
