As part of a lot I bought a T60. It worked just fine but the battery would not charge for some reason. It would start charging and then almost immediately the battery light on the lid would start blinking rapidly. So I bought a newer used genuine Lenovo battery for it on eBay. While it showed up in W7 Power Manager with 19 cycles it refused to charge it too citing the battery is bad. I tried both a 65W and 95W power supply.

After this I figured motherboard must the culprit and bought and installed another used one. Same exact story. So now I have 2 suspects:

1. both batteries are bad, although one with 19 cycles on it is a bit puzzling. Original one that came with the system has over 1000 cycles according to the software
2. power jack has an issue

Am I missing anything here?

Motherboard damage would be my guess. Not the power plug.

Do you have another *6x series machine somewhere that you could test these batteries with?

No, I do not. But if you notice I swapped motherboards! What are the chances that both mobos have the same identical issue? Very unlikely.

While I agree that it's unlikely, there might be a component (battery itself? adapter? something else?) that blows the charging fuse on contact...

I'm hoping this isn't the problem. Do you think the power jack could be a problem? It does seem to work ok otherwise.

More often than not, when people start to replace components/messing with the mobo etc etc etc, they do not wear any electrostatic wrist band or similar. Consequently, electrostatic charges need to be removed from the device else there may be weird issues.

Recently, my T60p powered up and OFF after approx 30 secs. Removing the power adapter/charger and battery then press/hold the power button for 10 seconds, 10 times and on the last time maybe longer. Seemed like magic, it resolved everything.

Just saying something worked for me, not necessary be beneficial to you as I have no idea of your particular issue.

Just holding the Power button down for 20 seconds does the same.
No need to go through that 'ritual'!

RBS, Does one have to remove all drives and memory when doing the cold reset or just the ac adapter and battery?

Just remove AC and battery.
