T61p - 6458-CTO - Max RAM not listed on ThinkWiki

#1 Post by DiagonalArg » Fri Feb 08, 2013 8:14 am

Anyone know if this thing will take 8GB? It's not listed here (actually a 6458-VCK):
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Unofficia ... mory_specs

Also, and by the way, this machine was manufactured 08/05. I take it this means the graphics chip is not long for this world? Should I unload this and try to pick up a T61p of later vintage? I"m finding a lot of these on the market now, out here in the Silicone Valley area. I got this one cheap, so I wouldn't be too pained ...

Or, since I did get it cheap, maybe I should just accept that I'll have to replace the mobo some day?

Any thoughts? Thanks -
/DA

All T61 can take 8GB RAM regardless of the configuration.

Yes, it appears your machine has the defective GPU chip, but who knows whether it will fail or not?

Good replacement motherboards are extremely rare (and expensive). I wouldn't bother. My suggestion would be...don't spend any more money on it, for RAM or anything else. Just use it like it is for as long as you can/want, and then upgrade to a newer ThinkPad. On the other hand, if you do add more RAM, at least you could sell that separately if and when the T61 dies.
Collection = T500 - R400 - X300 - X200 - T61 (14" WXGA+) - T61 (14.1" SXGA+) - T60 (15" SXGA+) - X40 - T43p - T43 - T42p - A30P - 600E

Neil - Thanks for the info!

As for upgrading to a newer thinkpad ... I'm not really a guy who buys new stuff. I wait until the wave comes, as corporations unload their inventory. Then I pick up what I can find. I like to say, I hang out on the trailing edge!

Now with that in mind, there are a lot of T60/61's around right now. So I'd like to get something that'll last me 'till the next wave! :wink:

I'm getting a T61 next, from 08/09 (2008/September)
T61 (6460-08U)
T9300(2.5GHz), 2GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 15.4in 1680x1050 LCD, 128MB nVIDIA Quadro NVS 140M, CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11agn wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, FPR, 6c Li-Ion, W7-Enterprice, Charger
It's supposedly in pristine condition, and equipped as above.
PM me if interested.
