Proper cooling of Penryn CPU on Merom board - Middleton BIOS

Hi everyone,

I am going to upgrade my t7100 to t8300 or t9300 using Merom motherboard and Middleton BIOS. I know that this bios hack thermal sensor error, but will this processor be cooled in proper way after that, knowing that readings from sensor were not correct.

What is your experience in that matter. I have board with Nvidia chipset, produced in late 2007, and would not like to fry it with new processor.

Thanks for reply!

Moderator edit: Changed the incorrect "Middletown" (in the thread title) to the correct "Middleton" to avoid confusion, and also to allow this thread to be (easier) found if Google'ing etc. for "Middleton".

The thermal error will be suppressed, and the CPU will be properly cooled, provided you clean CPU and cooler and apply fresh AS5.
Both T8300 and T9300 will run cooler anyway than the T7x00 series.
PS: it's Middleton BIOS.

Thanks for reply,

I was confused because, logically thinking there is a mismatch concerning Analog (Board) and Digital (CPU) sensors deciding how to run cooling fan. So if thermal sensor is disabled, how board know when to start cooling fan. Please correct me if i am wrong ?

I don't know all the technical details, but a Merom board with Middleton BIOS will cool a Penryn CPU properly.
There are several sensors on the board to detect CPU temperatures. And combined they keep it cool. 8)
There are many members on this forum who run a Merom board/Penryn CPU without any problems.

One of the advancements of the Penryn cpu die is it's ability to slip into ultra low power state, virtually shutting down when not used. It's never been proven that I'm aware but I suspect this ability may be impaired if run on a merom board, however the sensors that control the chips cooling and fan operation are the same on the merom and penryn cpu. I can tell you that I've run Penryn chips on merom boards many times and never had any issues with cooling. I would prefer a penryn board, but some of them are difficult to source. I've spent countless hours looking through countless laptops to get them and on the T61 4:3 they are exceptionally rare.
