Problems with Matshita UJ-842

Hello all.
I installed a UJ-842 recently and I have been having some problems with it.

I tried to burn an mp3 file set as an audio cd with CDBurnerXP but I was not allowed to burn DAO.
Also, when burn speed was set at 24x, the audio was choppy on the disc when played in my car.
I was able to burn data DVDs with no issues while using CDBurnerXP.

I tried to use InfraRecorder to burn the same mp3 file set.
When burning at 24x, the cd would get to the 7th of 15 tracks and stop burning.
I was able to burn the audio cd with no issues at 16x.

I am using ThinkPad T61 7659WAD.
Windows 7 Ultimate (x64) Service Pack 1 (build 7601).
Verbatim CD-R 52x as media.

Any ideas about what is going on here?
Anyone had these issues before?

Maybe the best thing to do would be to try it in another ThinkPad if you can. You can try some different software or discs just to rule them out. These things are so inexpensive these days, it's almost not worth the trouble. Maybe someone else has a better idea?
