I typically use the TrackPoint exclusively on my T60P, disabling the touchpad altogether. Recently the touchpad became active on its own, so that it ran concurrently with the TrackPoint. When I went into control panel to the Mouse option, I got an error message saying that the Synoptics driver could not be found (or opened... I forgot now), but then I was able to go into the mouse control options, where I once again disabled the touchpad. However, the fix was only temporary, and the touchpad once again became active.

The last time I got the error message it gave me an option to uninstall the Synoptics driver, and I did so. I then went to Lenovo to re-download the Synoptics driver, then downloaded the most recent version, 6HGX73WW.exe.

I then ran the executable, but got a warning message that the driver was not certified, asking me if I wanted to continue. I chose not to, but I am confused as to why the Lenovo branded driver would not be certified.

By the way, when I go into either device manager or into control panel (Mouse) it says that I have only the PS2 compatible mouse or pointing device.

Any help with this mess would be appreciated

You can disable the touchpad in BIOS, that's what I do on my ThinkPads.

Some Lenovo drivers will trigger a Windows warning regarding certifications/signatures etc. There was an older BT driver that used to bug the living daylight out of me with this nonsense.

So running the driver package will reinstall the Tracknav or whatever it's called? The tab that used to be there in the Control>Mouse window is now simply the PS2 mouse tab.

The pointing stick is so much better than any touchpad!

I must've had a brain fatigue last night. I've always deselected the touchpad in bios as well. Could something have turned it on without my having gone into bios?

The only oddity that I've experienced prior to this happening was an interrupted installation of a program by a suddenly appearing Java update that left behind what appears to be an orphan temp file.

I went into BIOS and disabled Touchpad, as it has been in the past. The question remains...how did it get reenabled recently?

Also, in general, is it better to update or install drivers individually, or to let the Lenovo Thinkpad manager do it? I believe the latter would like to autoupdate my GPU driver, but letting it do so runs counter to those who argue for the complete, manual uninstallation of such central drivers before installing new ones.

No idea. I've never had that happen, but it really doesn't mean much...

If you're still using the same T60p, and running Vista (presuming my memory is not completely shot) I'd tend to believe that there were no new graphics drivers released for quite some time...as in years...

Is that the current driver?

Do you think I should install that standalone Synaptics driver, and if so can I just run it in my normal desktop?
