2nd monitor never remembering settings

I have a Lenovo (IBM?) ThinkPad T60p and a Lenovo ThinkVision L1711p monitor connected through the VGA port, and it never remembers my display settings; I'm using Windows XP and I always set it to extend the desktop... but after unhooking and restarting, it just copies the desktop.
