T61 fan problems....

My T61 (7665 14" w/ nvidia) has a fan that's beginning to make serious grinding sounds. Has done a few "fan error"s at boot. No doubt the fan needs replacing. I take that it's a better idea to replace the whole fan/heatsink than try to take the fan off the heatsink? Soooo, where can I get a reliable heatsink/fan for this old slab of mine? I scoped some on ebay, but they don't give any info on whether they would fit mine. I know the heatsink on my old T61 (15" w/nvidia) would not fit. Any ideas? Offers?

(Sorry about mis-posting in the X** section.)

According to the hardware maintenance manual/holy bible for the T61, your model #7665 can take fans with either part #42W2462 or #44C0557, made by Toshiba and Furukawa respectively.

So I would start by looking on ebay for those part #'s. A very quick search on ebay for the Toshiba part # led to this fan. Don't forget to order your thermal paste too! I've had good luck with arctic silver five and the dot application method (placing a very small pea on the center of each of the contact points, a few mm's across). The spread method also seems to work well too though.

Get the Furukawa fan, it's quieter than the Tosh.

Whooooooa... that fan is for intel integrated graphics, NOT nVidia discrete!!!

If you use that fan you'll need a motherboard very soon.

I believe I have the proper fan for your nVidia graphics, either the original type or the updated one modeled after the T61p fan that has three heatpipes instead of two. I can probably find you one, if you'd like my help you can send me a PM.
