Questions about refurbished T60 ...

#1 Post by andrea b. » Wed Jun 26, 2013 9:54 pm

I have a bunch of questions about a refurbishedT60 I just got from Newegg; I've had good luck with used TPs; I've generally had good luck with Newegg as well, so - I tried a refurb. And, as you can tell from my questions, I'm a newbie.

1) The trackpoint works (as does the touchpad), but is very heavy; settings can't be accessed either by control panel or fn+f8. The pointing device is listed as a "PS/2 compatible mouse." No Ultra Nav or trackpoint to be found listed in Device manager. Do I need to download from Lenovo? Uninstall the listed mouse?

2) On a similar note (and I imagine for a related reason) the ThinkVantage button doesn't work. I realize I can download the TV suite from Lenovo ... but I figured this would be installed.

3) The lid seems more like plastic than rubberized magnesium alloy - is this the case with refurbs / recertified units?

4) The HDD was to be a 60 GB; shows 64.4 GB of 74.3GB available ... just curious about these odd numbers! Can I assume this is probably an 80GB drive with a partition?

5) I see the price has come down since my purchase...Arrrggghh!

Thanks for listening...!

1. You need to install Lenovo Ultranav driver (you can get it from their site or using System Update).

2. As you say, it's a software configuration thing.

3. The 14.1" T60 lids are magnesium alloy. The 15" and 15.4" lids are Carbon-fiber reinforced plastic.

4. Yes, a 80GB decimal drive (as the manufacturer measures) will show as a ~74GB drive when counted in binary (as the OS measures).
Current: X220 4291-4BG, T410 2537-R46, T60 1952-F76, T60 2007-QPG, T42 2373-F7G
Collectibles: T430s (IPS FHD + Classic Keyboard), X32 (IPS Screen)
Retired: X61 7673-V2V, A31p w/ Ultrabay Numpad
Past: Z61t 9440-A23, T60 2623-D3U, X32 2884-M5U

Thanks so much, dr_st!

Another question then ... or a couple of questions.

The lid ... well, it sure doesn't feel like my other Tpads'! Plastic feel - no rubberization - I can live with it.

The display is VGA ... I'm used to (if I'm not mistaken - and display issues always confuse me!) SVGA. It shows poorer definition of fine letters (after resetting resolution 1024- 768) - there's a bit of 'bleed' esp. with white-on-black background. In the color calibration wizard, I'm unable to get to gamma settings - there are no sliders to be found when I access color calibration. I can't even find contrast control settings. (It's as if the thing were configured for a desktop, with controls right on the monitor, and not for a laptop?)

So - how would I get to the contrast and gamma settings?

Thanks again!

It will be easier to help you, if you provide the full 7-character model type of your laptop. The T60 came with a variety of displays and graphical adapters; these might need different drivers.

It's a 2007 66U.

I've solved the Ultranav problem by installing the drivers, and installed system update as well. I tried to download the monitor file for windows 7, but it ... doesn't download. That is, a tab opens that loads endlessly.

The color calibration on the machine seems geared for a desktop - with knobs mounted on monitor. (The version of Win 7 it came with is 'Windows 7 for Refurbished PCs'. Is this a clue?)

Thanks again!

To be able to set up the graphics correctly, you need a Vista driver for ATi graphics from here:

http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... d533ww.exe

After downloading it, you must go into C>Drivers>Win>Video and run the setup file from there.

After rebooting, go into Catalyst Control Panel and adjust the settings to your liking.

ThinkPad T60 (2007-66U) :
T2500(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 128MB ATI Radeon X1400, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

If the display is still original, 1400x1050 will look great (though small) with the correct driver.
If you change it to 1024x768 the characters will look worse (though bigger).
If you want bigger characters, than use the 1400x1050 setting and then change the DPI to 125%.
