Been going through 90w power adapters...suggestions?

I seem to be going through power adapters on my T61. Last week my 3-prong, 90w adapter gave up the ghost in the middle of the workday. The 110v cord tested fine, the problem was in the transformer. This unit is less than 1 year old and is a Lenovo brand. Has anyone tried one of the higher wattage units for newer Thinkpads? Are there any superior aftermarket brands that have held up? TIA for useful advice and relevant wisdom.

I've never had one of the 90w Lenovo adapters break down. Do you normally place the adapter in a particular location or see any frayed wires? I'm not particularly careful but do try and place them away from heat and avoid fraying the cord during travel.

I haven't tried these with T61s that use Nvidia or ATI graphics, just Intel. That may put more stress on the transformer.

many of the replacement adapters appear to be generics that lenovo has rebranded, especially the 3prong ones. I'd recommend an original 2prong usa part. If you want some I have used ones in excellent condition for $16 plus shipping and I think I still have a couple originals that were never used for $25.

Be careful of generics, I've had them get so hot that the plastic melts and in one case I had one catch on fire. I stick only to genuine ones now, but I think there are good and bad generics out there so I don't want to say they are all bad.

I second TuuS on using the two prong original 90w versions. I have had the 65w(any) and generics(any w) get very hot. I've got a couple on hand but they are in storage.

Thanks for the replies. The one that failed was a Lenovo 3-pronger. I've placed an order on eBay for another just like it. Wish me luck.

Good luck

If you have another failure, then I'd highly recommend you heed our advice. The 2 prong adapter may cost a little more, but I've rarely seen them fail and the cords are much easier to stow (less bulky)

Many of the 3-prong adapters that say Lenovo are really imitation adapters that are poorly made. The wires on the output side of the transformer often crack.

FRU P/N on the label is 92P1108. The case is identical to other 2-prongers that I have both in design as well as labeling.
P/N is listed as 3 prong unit on Lenovo website, (http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloa ... D=PD011349).
