Been lurking and learning here for years, it's long past time for me to become a forum member.
If you want to skip the story and get to the heart of it, kindly begin reading at the second-to-last paragraph.
About three years ago, I bought a 14.1 T61, a worn but serviceable 7663. It has a T7300 and a build date of 06/08. I discovered (thanks to this forum) that it was an "at risk" A1 chipset revision, but it still runs perfectly today. Again thanks to the advice here, I found and flashed the Middleton bios, installed an SSD, an Ultrabay HDD and a USB 3 card. It resulted in a truly fast, rock-solid machine that leaves me wanting for very little, except maybe a matte screen.
It has a very worn appearance now. The cover looks rough, the palmrest and keyboard are very shiny, USB ports worn, etc. But it runs great. I've put two touchpads and a fan in since I acquired it. It runs hard every day for hours, both for business and pleasure. I set out to find some parts to do a partial refurb this past week. I found a B grade LCD assembly with a good looking cover for about $35. Then, while looking for a better palmrest, I found an entire 7663 base assembly with a T7500, wireless, optical drive, etc. and a build date of 08/08 that looked very close to new in the pictures - for less than $50!
I rolled the dice and bought it. The base came in Saturday. I got into it to find the heatsink and rollcage both had July 2008 dates, and the video chip is a week 24 '08 A2. The factory tape was undisturbed, the wiring was all routed correctly, internal screws looked pristine, and there was a small amount of dust and pet hair in a few spots where it would be expected on a used unit. It seems to be a legit 08/08 base. The USB ports are still tight, very minor wear on the keyboard and almost none on the touchpad, and the optical drive feels like opening a new unit. Passes all diagnostics so far. It's pretty amazing, at least to me! Feels like I won the T61 lottery or something.
So now, I have two T61's! Well, almost. I had to cannibalize the older unit to get the new one running. I needed some screws and an apparently hard-to-find part - the metal retaining bracket that holds the LCD cable in place on the motherboard. Lenovo calls it a "LCD FPC Bracket". I have more screws on the way, but I cannot find this bracket for sale anywhere.

Thanks, Bill and everyone else for creating this very valuable resource. I've learned so much here - maybe I'll have a few tips and tricks of my own contribute in the future. Thanks again to everyone for all the help over the years!
