Quick T60/1 Frankie Question.

#1 Post by misfit » Sun Aug 11, 2013 5:30 am

Could someone kindly tell me if the motherboard from a 14.1" T61 type 7659-AE2 would fit into a T60 case? I have a 15" T60 type 2623-A11 that came with a dead ethernet port.

I need to replace the planar and there's an auction for above T61 closing soon. Depending on how high it goes I was wondering if it'd do the job? I was planning on fitting one of those LED UXGA screens to that T60 sometime in the near future.

Thanks for any replies.
Shaun.

Check out yourself at support.lenovo.com/en_US/landing.page?qpq=7659-AE2 and support.lenovo.com/en_US/landing.page?qpq=2623-A11:
The mainboard of the 16:10 T61 type 7659-AE2 won't match any 4:3 T60 type 2623-A11, regardless whether the latter is 14.1" or 15" size.

Thanks, I've already been there.

Now that's the sort of thing I wanted to know, thanks. I'd not planned on making a T60/1 Frankie (until I got this T60, found out it had a shot ethernet chip - then saw the T61 auction whilst trying to find a cheap-ish replacement motherboard donor).

Consequently I've not previously taken notice of the specifics of what T61 board fits in a 15" T60 while reading the forum before.

Many thanks.
Shaun.

You need a board from a machine with a model number starting in 8***, such as 8897, 8895, 8892 etc.

Thanks George, I'll probably stick with a T60 board. I just noticed that T61 when I was looking for a T60 and wondered...

I'll make a note of that though just in case things change.

Cheers,
Shaun.

The advantages of the T61 board is...

Ram: 8gb vs 3gb
cpu: 2.8ghz merom or penryn vs 2.33ghz yonah or merom
hdd: SATA2 vs SATA1

As well as some better graphics options.

Thanks, yes, I'm aware of the benefits. Alas, here in New Zealand T61s haven't hit the corporate re-marketing scene yet so are rare - and expensive. Also most that *do* show up are short-screen and hence of no use to me.

(Actually a friend of mine who's responsible for buying laptops for some rather large corporations told me that around 2008 a lot of IT departments got the jitters about it being Lenovo rather than IBM. Consequently the majority started buying from Dell instead.)

Factor in the fact that I'm on the poverty line (ThinkPads are a passion and a hobby - the only hobby I have left actually) and it gets tough for me to make a nice Frankie. In fact I might end up replacing the X1400 planar with the dud ethernet for a (T60) Intel integrated planar to drive my much-anticipated LED UXGA. :-/

I'm expecting one of your screens to arrive any day now from my mate in NYC. If you can give me any pointers for modding an inverter (maybe by PM?) I'd appreciate it and will keep it out of the public domain (so as not to impinge in a member's business). Alas, it wasn't until my mate had left that I noticed that Dom was offering an inverter mod service. I'm don't think that was on the site when I'd looked previously (or maybe it was and I'd not taken note of it as postage both ways would make it crazy-expensive).

Best,
Shaun.
