I have a ThinkPad T60 and every time I try to
start the T60, I get a fan error and it shuts down.
I had this error in the past but it would boot up.

When you had the error but could still boot it was likely because the fan was failing but still worked somewhat. Now I think it likely that the fan has quit completely. You could relace the fan, or it is possible that it could be repaired with a cleaning and lubrication. I have done the latter a couple of times on T60s.

what exact type/model is your T60?

If you need a fan, I have a brand new one for a T60 14.1 (4:3) for sale if that is what you need

I need a Heat sink and a fan for my T60 Type 2008-GDU. FRU 41W6407. *If thats what you have

Folks, Ebay has a HFC listed for around $30. Its new, but I dont think its genuine lenovo. Is it worthwhile buying a no name brand?

For $30, no. You can often get the non-genuine ones for under $20, new.

On eBay, You can get a genuine heatsink for $15 or less if you don't mind buying used. New ones genuine ones will still occasionally pop up for under $30, but you need to scout for them.

It's usually better to buy from someone on the forum.

I addressed the fan error on my T60 (2008-gdu) by oiling the fan with sewing machine oil, cleaned HFC, CPU and GPU with Articlean, applied a thin layer of Artic Silver 5 on CPU. The GPU thermal pad was worn out so I scrapped that off and applied thermal paste on the GPU also.

I got a BSOD, the first time I switched the laptop on, followed by a "windows is loading files' on the next attempt. After a few attempts, the machine works well now for about 15-20 minutes and then freezes. Temps start at around 48 and climb up to 51c on TPFC smart setting. The fan doesnt run at these temps. However when I change the setting to manual, the fan kicks in
and the temps drop to 49 ( both CPU and GPU). The fan runs very quite.

Did I do anything wrong or missed out anything while fixing the fan error. Why would the laptop freeze? How do I fix it? Any help would be appreciated.

The thermal paste works better than the pad, but you need to be sure you have good contact between the gpu and platform. Sometimes some minor adjustment is required. One way to be sure it's fitting is to slide a small strip of paper between the platform and chip and by applying light pressure you can feel it grip the paper. If it grips more on one part of the die compared to the others, then you don't have a good fit, or if there is a gap you'll need to adjust the heatsink so the gap is closed.

The laptop powers for just 3 seconds and powers off. Boot up screen does not appear. Fan runs OK though.
