Upgrade t61p from t7300 to t8100

Hi,

I have got a t61p, bought in 2007 with t7300. It is still going strong, however it is getting quite hot some times. That is why I want to change the cpu to t8100, which should run much cooler (t8100 is the coolest cpu for this laptop, right?). The t7300 is already undervolted a lot, but I think the t8100 can run even cooler after undervolt.

However I am not sure whether my motherobard support the t8100 (penryn), because the original t7300 is a merom.

However the motherboard has been replaced 3 times (!) last time in 2010. So I wonder where I can see for sure whether my t61p will fully support the t8100. So where can I find the acutal FRU number of my motherboard?

Any other tips or recommendations to lower the temperature?

Welcome to the forum!

FRU number for the board is by the RAM slots, you'll have to remove the palmrest in order to get to it.

If the board is a Merom one, a modded (aka Middleton's) BIOS will be required for a Penryn CPU to operate in it without throwing a thermal sensing error.

As for the temps, ThinkPad Fan Control (free software) is your friend.

@ajkula66. How does one determine if it is a Merom board?

My FRU number appeared to be: 44c3931, which supports penryn cpus according to http://t61.wikispaces.com/

So all is good! :D
