motherboard replacement T61 (solved)
motherboard replacement T61 (solved)
Hello all, new member here.
I have a Thinkpad T61 where I need to replace the motherboard.
It has the modell nr. 7663-D35.
Would these work and what would be the difference between them ? (sorry for the german links)
http://www.ebay.de/itm/IBM-Lenovo-Mothe ... 2ec7126be6
http://www.ebay.de/itm/IBM-Mainboard-Th ... 5af35ecd50
I did a search here before posting and found a similar thread
http://forum.thinkpads.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=98874
but honestly the sheer number and variations of mobo's there overwhelmed me a bit.
Thanks.

Re: motherboard replacement T61
Welcome to the forum.
Your machine is a 14.1" widescreen with nVidia NVS140M.
These boards will fit:
Intel GM965
-41W1487 Merom
-42W7866 Penryn
Nvidia NVS140
-41W1489 Merom
-44C3933/42W7867 Penryn
Penryn is a more powerful CPU than Merom, and Penryn also runs cooler than Merom.
On any of those boards it is advisable to install Middleton's BIOS: http://forum.notebookreview.com/lenovo/ ... ost6501443
A Merom board then also becomes Penryn capable.
If you want nVidia, make sure to get a board made in 08/08 (year 2008/month 08) or later.

Will the discrete fan also fit in the planar with integrated graphics?

Thanks for the fast reply and the welcome.
So just to be sure before I order (sorry I'm a noob what concers this stuff)
from the two boards linked you'd recommend the 42W7866 ?
Or is there any drawback having an Intel chipset ?

Re: motherboard replacement T61
I would advise to get an Intel board any time, rather than an nVidia.
And it's not the chipset, but the GPU that we are talking about.
Discrete fans fit perfectly on integrated boards, but not the other way around!
