A new gadget that's an SD card that has the memory replaced with a 3G sim card instead.

I guess that using the expresscard slot with one of these SD card readers would work:

I've never used an expresscard so not sure whether that particular one would sit flush inside the T60.

This card is SDIO. It depends of reader if it supports SDIO, or not. At least my internal reader in T400 is not supporting them (have a few old cards like wifi, bluetooth, even camera and laser barcore reader).

And if you want to use EC slot... why not just buy a modem on EC and save a few bucks ?

I have one. That one fits almost flush. The card does stick out though.

Don't even think paying $28 for it, when they go for about $10 on eBay.

I imagine it requires SDIO support for these cards to work, and the thing about SDIO is that it's so uncommon that it's hard to find mention of it in device specs, to know if it's supported or not.

If you don't mind spending a bit more, I'd go for this:
http://www.amazon.com/32-bit-CardBus-Ad ... 0494XX20/2
http://www.ebay.com/itm/SD-SDHC-SDIO-32 ... 3352a2f020

It has several advantages, in addition to clearly stating SDIO support:
* It sits really flush and so does the card
* It uses the CardBus slot, leaving the ExpressCard available for peripherals that can make better use of it (such as USB3.0 adapters).

The advantages I see in using an ExpressCard adapter is that it's bootable, whereas the CardBus is not (in case you ever considered booting from a SD card), or if you need SDXC (>32GB) support under WinXP. The XP SD Host drivers don't seem to handle it well.

I am currently working on a fairly comprehensive review of some of these little gadgets; hope to publish it here soon. :)
