I have one t60 with 2gb ram, and the other with 4gb ram. Is it ok to mix manufactures and types so that each has 3gb of ram?

Should the bigger ram go in a specific slot?

Yes it's OK to mix manufacturers, especially if the speed and timing are the same. Doesn't matter which slot the sticks go in, either.

Yep, I mix and match all the time. Don't even bother to checked timing most of the time.

Well, the 2gb modules have 666 speed and the 1gb modules have 555 5300 whatever speed on them which is slower.

I'm guessing then that the ram will downclock to the slower speed.

This sucks because I'd prefer the fastest speed possible, but it makes my slower home t60 (which I use more as of late) faster, but my travel t60(which I don't use as much) slower.

I'm hoping that this falls into the category of 'too small of a difference to notice'

Although I will appreciate the 'full' 3gb on the home t60

Mixed RAM will always work at the speed of the slowest module.
The T60 can use PC2-4200 (533MHz), PC2-5300 (667MHz) and PC2-6400 (800MHz) RAM, but the laptop will ONLY work at max. 667MHz, unless you modify the CPU and other stuff.

You'll never notice RAM speed. Quantity is more important. I highly recommend 3 GB. The only time you notice differences in RAM speed is under benchmarks and even then not significant. A SSD will make the biggest difference.
