Replacement keyboard for a T60 1952-A46

Hi all,

I (still) use my T60 but the keyboard is crapping out. A few of the keys are getting really unresponsive and I sometimes need to press certain keys several times in order for them to register. I've used this computer a lot and I just think the keyboard is wearing out.

Most I would like a Swedish keyboard, since I'm a Swede and I live in Sweden. But it seems that they're not that easily found, and they can cost up to €80 at online.

Is there any untapped source that I'm missing here?

Thanks for any help!

You don’t have to limit your search to only a ‘T60’ keyboard.
Keyboards from these models are interchangeable (thanks to ThinkRob)

T60 (both sizes)
T60p (both sizes)
T61 (both sizes, both aspect ratios)
Z60*
Z61*
T400
T500
W500
R60
R61
R400
R500

Very rare but there is a used one in the UK.

Welcome to the forum! :-)

You have a 14.1" ThinkPad with the following (stock) configuration:
ThinkPad T60 (1952-A46)
Based on 1952-43U: T2400(1.83GHz), 1GB RAM, 60GB 5400rpm HD, 14.1in 1024x768 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip, 6c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro
There are three different keyboards for T60's... see Keyboard service parts - ThinkPad T60, T60p standard screen (standard 4:3 format LCD's) these being:

ALPS: 39T7139 and Chicony: 39T7199 and NMB: 39T0979

You'll e.g. find the 39T7139 very cheaply (in a "Lighty used") version here. In Finland, I find another one - brand new! (I think!) --> here Google is your friend! :thumbs-UP:

Suggestion: Try use Google's "Advanced Search" and search for the three above FRU's in Swedish and Finnish sites. Also, I suggest you review the thread T60 compatible keyboards. You will find very clear and detaille dinstructions about replacing the keyboard on Lenovo's site, on Youtube and many other places (please ask for help, if you can't find this information.. as I'm too lazy right now to find links etc.).

Final thing: If you (like me!) are still fond of and satisfied with your T60, and if you don't have one already, I (strongly!) suggest that you upgrade your T60 with a SSD... see e.g. the thread Adding an SSD to a T60

Good luck bringing your T60 back to its prior beauty again!

So, I'm still looking for that keyboard. Managed to find this on ebay. Not sure whether it will fit though.

I read through the T60 compatible keyboards thread, and there was this, from Peak2Peak:

"Do not know of a an "unofficial" compatible list, but can confirm that I have replaced a clients very worn out T60 keyboard with a new R400/T400/T500/W500 UK keyboard FRU: 42T3961 (P/N 42T3928) ... "

The keyboard with FRU 42T3124 (which I found on ebay) and FRU 42T3961 doesn't seem to be too far away in terms of FRU code... Or am I totally off here?

Should it actually fit my ThinkPad, I'll be sure to get it. The SSD option is tempting to say the least.

The keyboard you link to, FRU 42T3124, is a NMB, Norwegian language, for ThinkPad's T61 and T61p (15.4" widescreen); see ThinkPad T61 and T61p (15.4-inch widescreen) Hardware Maintenance Manual and it will fit - see e.g. the threads T60P Keyboard in a T61 and/or WTB: New NMB keyboard w/US layout for 15" (4:3) T60.

Bottom line? Stop searching, looking, waiting, wishing... simply go grab it! :-) Any, ooh yes, also get yourself a SSD... man, your life will never become the same again if doing that! 8)

Just wanted to post my success story...

I ordered the keyboard that I linked to earlier, the Norwegian one, brand new from justlaptops.com via ebay.

(For anyone visiting this topic, interested in getting a new keyboard:)

The only thing that differs from the Swedish layout is that the key itself shows Æ instead of Ä, and Ø instead of Ö. But as long as you have set the keyboard layout to Swedish in your operating system, everything should be fine.

It feels a bit different from the one I had before. I think the new one is a bit louder, somehow. Maybe because it fits tighter together with the rest of the laptop body, more so than the original keyboard. Feels super rigid, an I'm definately super happy.

Anyways, I'm super happy and I can definately see why this board exists.

So, things still to do: new screen, SSD, max out RAM.

I think this machine has another decade ahead of itself. :)
