T60 DVD writer drive

I'm trying to source a replacement cd/dvd writer drive for my T60p but I'm having serious difficulty in getting the correct drive. It currently has a CD-RW/DVD ROM drive, FRU 39T2685. I've already been sold a claimed DVD writer drive which on arrival turned out to be similar to my drive, that is, it didn't write to DVD's, but as the seller didn't include the FRU number in the description I couldn't check. Does anyone know of a list of specific drive types with FRU or ASM numbers so I can check which DVD writer drives fit my T60 - or can suggest a suitable part number so I can actually get what I'm looking for?

All part numbers are listed in the HMM, but probably the easiest solution would be to go to eBay and search for a drive. You might want to post in the marketplace forum here as well to see if anyone has a spare drive they'd be willing to sell you.

Garth:

Try see the thread WTB: "Ultrabay Slim Multi-Burner III" (DVD-RW) for a T60 listing relevant FRU’s for the fastest DVD-RW drives (at the time of posting that), being the following: 39T2829, 39T2828, 42T2506, 39T2851, 39T2570. Check eBay for best offers, or (far better!), post a "WTB" (want to buy) or "LF" (looking for) adversitement in The Marketplace in this forum... people here know what they're selling (AND the condition of items), as opposed (often, at least) to what is the case on e.g. eBay...

I've paid as little as $6 with shipping for a "tested working" dvd writer drive on ebay(Dec 2012) - using part number 39T2850

Searching for 39T2679 also yields some promising hits

Sometimes one finds things where least expected: I've sourced my DVD writer by buying an X6x docking station, keeping the writer and then selling back the dock, effectively for a very cheap final price. So keep an eye on relevant docks as well.

Sorry might be superfluous info here ; and I have still lots of T Series in my basement ....
tip = look @ HMM and see "equivanant X- part numbers" or "superseaded/replaced-by FRU numbers"
often they are cheaper (easier to get also) to buy !

>From Memory (sorry old fart now retired and dont care to tinker with TPs etc but still have a few AS SHIPPED T Series in storage in basement ! ) used to be 4x DVd wrte speed.... and T61 = x8 speed writer!
AND ALSO lenovo used another silly trick to stop people from using these T61 series (slim body writers) on other models ( ie x series etc) was via ADDING a "plastic tab" or a PLASTIUC LIP at one side of the "DVD writer". The SATA interface was/is backword compatable etc ....so I would just BREAK THE PLACTIC TAB / LIP .... and slot them in !!! and wah lah ! they worked fine ( be it a bit faster speed !!)

Kids used LOVE the OLDEST T60 IPS LAPTOP(s) - to watch movies etc as the DISPLAYS are great !! and yet shun the new T61 (wide screen) model !! ... so thats why I did swap out the DVD DRIVES !!!

Thanks for all your helpful suggestions. I've followed the links to thinkwiki to pick up the model numbers there. Whats' the difference between a "Super Multi" and a "DVD burner" - just the different name for the same device? And who are HMM?

HMM = Hardware Maintenance Manual
You can download the manual for your model from the Lenovo Support web site.
