T60 shuts down

#1 Post by hhmcsv » Fri Feb 07, 2014 5:13 am

Now and then my T60 will shut down unexpectedly, just like a forced shutdown, i.e. immediately a black screen. In the log it is mentioned as Kernel power, id41. Happens randomly, over the last year 24 times, i.e. once every two weeks but with no fixed pattern.
After the shutdown, the T60 will start normally and function without any anomalities.
Any ideas about the cause of this, HW or SW (Win8.1) ?

Bought a used T61 that did exactly this but more frequently. Turned out the previous owner put a screw into the keyboard drain hole instead of the screw hold. The screw was long enough to short the MB and caused an immediate shutdown. It was a T61p that I bought for $40 mainly for the 4 GB memory and T9300 CPU. After fixing the short, it's been working fine ever since.

So, I suspect there's a short somewhere. Try pressing on various parts of the chasis. Could also be a battery problem too.

Could be your thermal paste is dried out. I had one that did that when running cpu stress test, and when performing windows updates. If it happens when windows update or something else is utilizing the CPU, it could be the paste.

Thank you very much for the suggestions.
The first suggestion, that some screw was doing a short somewhere could be discounted as I have had the keyboard and palmrest taken off several times - and the length of the screws are as they should be according to the HMM.
Now, after a week with no shutdowns, it happened again yesterday. And this time it had consequences as to the loss of the entire content of my inbox in Thunderbird mailprogram. But strange enough there was no loss in my other folders in Thunderbird.
But the inbox was open at the time.
But when I did the usual restart, it was obvious that it was in a middle of a Windows update.
So as I never have had the fan assembly taken out, I figured that this could be the time for a fan lubrication and application of new thermal paste. I replaced also one of the thermal pads.
This was done 5 mins. ago, so now I keep my fingers crossed that this little operation would solve the problem - leading up to the birthday of the T60 in march - 7 years :D

So, after a day I had a shutdown afterall. Temperatures right after startup (which was normal) was about 70 deg. C.
So my fault is obvious not overheating :(

Could this type of random shutdown with the "Kernel power"-error be caused by the SSD?

As you may see from the error log below, these shutdowns occur at a very irregular pattern. A few times twice a day, at other times with 3 months between.
Any ideas as to why?
