Bought some pretty much brand new t60's today for $50 each.

There were govt issued ones that were loaded with software and then stored but never issued to anyone.

I feel like a scored but I know these dont have high value

Not a bad deal no matter where one went to school.

With that said, what are you intent on doing with them? What are the specs anyway?

At one point in the game I had an A31p in *every* room in my house - bathrooms not included - and that grew old pretty fast...

I'd say that's a good deal. Be a steal if they all came with 3 GB RAM, 15" Flexview and X1400.

If they were mint 15" 4:3, he could sell the palmrests for $50.

Now isn't this cute. I guess I should switch the focus of my Frankenpadding to R60 cases.

Only thing that stinks is that they came with unactivated Win 7 Enterprise on them so I need to find some OS key or something in 90 days

That's an excellent deal. You'll have no trouble tripling your investment presuming they've got IPS screens.

How does one check the IPS'ness of my screens

What's the 7-character model number on the bottom of the laptop - the same sticker that holds the serial and the production date?

It's very simple. If the resolution is 1400x1050 or 1600x1200 they are IPS.
I think they were only available in Configure-To-Order (xxxx-CTO) units.

And there are two types of 1600x1200 screens: one normal, and the other with an sRGB color space.

Nope.

There's a ton of standard machines with IPS screens...I currently own several 2007-55U (SXGA+) and 2623-DDU (UXGA) units...

OK that's a widescreen T60...with the lowest resolution screen. Not IPS and not desirable as a parts machine - those palmrests are not rare like ones for the 4:3 units - but still not a bad deal...

ThinkPad T60 (6370-A49)

Based on 6370-6BU: T7200(2GHz), 1GB RAM, 80GB 5400rpm HD, 15.4in 1280x800 LCD, Intel 950, CDRW/DVD, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth, Modem, 10/100 Ethernet, 9c Li-Ion, WinXP Pro

I do have one 4:3 14 as my personal one but the model number sticker is missing, any where else I can find the serial?

BIOS page.

Unit serial number where the first 7 characters (say 200766U) are the model number and the rest (L3B1234) is the actual serial number.

If its correct your specs are:
T7600(2.33GHz), 1GB RAM, 100GB 7200rpm HD, 14.1in 1400x1050 LCD, 256MB ATI FireGL V5250,
CDRW/DVDRW, Intel 802.11abg wireless, Bluetooth/Modem, 1Gb Ethernet, UltraNav, Secure chip,
Fingerprint reader, 9c Li-Ion batt, WinXP Pro

On the lot of T60s you got, for them being mint condition I think its a heck of a deal.
You didn't strike oil while digging, but I think they'd resale nicely with the condition they are in.

They all have 90 day liscenses for Win 7 Enterprise, where is the cheapest place to get 5 liscenses for just like basic 7?

Excuse my ignorance but why are the 15" 4:3 T60 palmrests so sought-after? I posted one to a random stranger in a newsgroup a while back as he said his lid clasps were broken - is that the issue?

Heh! I didn't know they were valuable. I'd just kept a few spares for mine and he seemed like a nice chap. He'd bought the machine on my recommendation.

Best,

If they have Win7 of any version on them they cannot be totally unused, since they did not come with Win7 originally on them.

I also today scored a good deal on three Lenovo T60, of which one was a T60p, all for 90 bucks, and I think a lot more might be coming on the market at this point probably due to XP support being eliminated.

Its only my theory, but my local Salvation Army was filled with desktops that all had XP stickers of authenticity on them, along with a dozen or so laptops, all but one Thinkpads, that also came with XP originally on them.

They might not want these used in corp. environments anymore because I.T. depts cannot get anymore automatic updates for new exploits or threats. Some businesses seem to be donating or getting rid of a lot of XP machines all at once right now.

I would guess someone had a V/L (volume licensing) edition and installed it on all of them. You need a V/L key from a university etc.. and might not be able to buy a key for all 5 if its a V/L edition and the original I.T. guy for the school did not activate it. They only get so many activations with each V/L key, so maybe he did not want to waste it until the computer was actually being issued.

I would seriously recommend just D/L'ing a free copy of Linux Mint and install that. For basic surfing and email its all you need and easy to set up. I got a brand new copy of MS Vista in the original plastic box at the Goodwill store for 4.99, so you could also keep your eyes open for a deal on software at such places.

If you tried to buy a install key and activate it for a Retail licensing version of Win7 it would run you more than all the computers are worth, imho.
