So today, suddenly the trusty T60 (2007-VPX) would not start, and Win8 gave a description of a "NMI hardware failure" to be the cause .

Searching on the net of possible clues to this failure gave no results so I decided that the machine was bricked and I found an almost exact replacement locally.

So out with the SSD and the ATI wifi-card from the old one and into this one, a 1952-CTO I am typing on now.
And miraculously, Windows 8 is still registered as "activated" without me doing anything - so instant success

But does anybody know of this fault and can it be related to the "Kernel power 41 (63) that has been occurring with irregular intervals ?

Download, burn and run a live Linux distro and see what happens.

Nope, it will not boot from a Ubuntu disk nor from my Win8 installation disk.

Well I believe the kernel power thing is usually driver related. If the machine still powers on and is able to get into the BIOS, you can do further troubleshooting.

Your 2007-VPX is rather similar to my T60p. I love the 14.1" models.

I had to replace the mobo in mine after the GPU/FSB got fried. Did yours by chance exhibit random freezing?

Yes, the "kernel power" fault did sometimes just freeze the T60, but it could be started Again normally. But this fault is according to a Google search hitting many different brands and also Win7 as well as Win8. But without any clear indication as to a solution. Maybe drivers, but which ?

But todays NMI fault is a bit more definitive - but now I've got plenty of spare screws

And a big disappointment for me, WHO thougth that a T60 was completely indistructible

I'd point one finger on the Radeon GPU, another on the RAM, and a middle finger on the system board.

The 2007-VPH has an ATI X1300 GPU, your new 1952-CTO has an Intel GPU.
And Theokrates's T60p has ATI FireGL 5200 or 5250 GPU, all of them totally different.
Usually it's the (bit infamous) ATI X1400 GPU that causes problems due to running very hot!

As I am now pretty much happy about my new 1952-Y9H instead of the bricked 2007-VPX there is little concerns. Being half a year older, the 1952 does not include Bluetooth and of cause the 1400x1050 screen was awesome. Would I get that and Bluetooth back by just changing the whole lid assembly over?
