Reasonable Average CPU and GPU Temps For IBM Thinkpad T60p

#1 Post by Thinkpads4Life » Tue Apr 08, 2014 2:01 pm

I'm curious what average CPU/GPU temps for a IBM Thinkpad t60p are. I generally get around 59 to 64c CPU temp overall with the GPU at around 71 to 75 c. I'm just wondering if these are normal temps for running it at its full 2 GHz in both cores with 30 to 50 percent CPU usage according to gkrellm on Linux Mint Debian Edition Cinnamon.

I'd say you're doing OK, especially for the fact that ThinkPads tend to run warmer in Linux than in Windows.

I'd definitely recommend changing out the stock thermal paste with some arctic silver--

Also, there's a way to mod the thermal pillow for the GPU with copper plates instead (I have yet to do this mod, but am planning to do so).

I got my T60p to running around 47C. Which is considerably better than how it was (60 - 80C). The continual overheating eventually thermally killed the system board on a very hot day... the screen went black and that was it hahaha. I wasn't even aware that the T60s had a thermal shutdown mechanism-- I knew the thing was always running too hot, but apparently it never did anything. Perhaps because it was running such an old version of the BIOS being a super early T60p.

I plan on doing a complete web page at some point outlining all of the mods and important FRUs for T60s. Very featureful thinkpads...
2x T60p, 1x T61, loads of 701Cs, 1x WorkPad Z50, 2x TransNotes other random thinkpads...
