T61 w/ T9300 - no POST

#1 Post by chubbyfatazn » Fri Apr 11, 2014 4:48 pm

Today I popped a T9300 into my T61 and turned it on, expecting it to POST and boot up normally. Instead, I was greeted by a blank screen - no splash screen, just the power and battery LEDs illuminated. I put the old T7700 back in and everything came up normally.

I'm thinking there's something with the board that's preventing startup. I suppose the CPU could also be dead, but in the course of two decades handling dozens of CPUs I've never seen one just give up the ghost, ignoring the overvolted ones... Murphy's Law I guess.

I did find this thread with a similar problem, but nothing came out of that. Did see a poster mention how no Penryn CPU he's ever tried in a Merom board worked, though. I don't have another -61 with me to test it on at the moment.

Planar FRU is 42W9380 (4:3 w/ integrated graphics) with Middleton's BIOS. CPU is a SLAYY T9300, no bent pins or anomalous markings. Everything else is identical to what's in the sig.

Anyone else ever experience such a thing?

Cheers.

That does sound like a dead CPU. Try another Penryn...8100/8300 are dirt cheap nowadays.

Good luck.
