Are T61 14.1 and 15.4 motherboards compatible?

#1 Post by Joel Chase » Fri Apr 18, 2014 2:06 pm

I have a 15.4 inch T61 with the NVIDIA chip. Can I swap its motherboard with a 14.1 motherboard with the Intel Video chip? Are there any issues with doing this? Both boards are wide screen. Thanks.

No.

Only a 15.4" board will do in that set of circumstances.

T61/p series was offered in three different sizes, and each of them carried a completely different planar.

FrankenPad is created by putting a 14" (4:3) T61/p board into a 15" (4:3) T60/p frame.

What about it won't work? Is it the size, shape or connectors? Unfortunately, I already order the motherboard so I guess I'm stuck with it, but fortunately I got it at an incredible price and it includes a 2.2 GHz CPU. If there's no way it can work, perhaps I can get a 14" T61 and install the motherboard on it. A scrapped 14" can be had for nothing.

NOTHING will work.

Your best bet - presuming you can't return the planar - is to get a 14" WS R61 or T61 with a dead board or password lock.

The frame of the 15.4" laptop is different shape to the 14.1" motherboard.
You might need to do some cutting/filing if you'll want it to fit...
Even then, the ports are different for the unit, usb and headphone jack comes in different areas of the case.
So a snippit there perhaps, and you'll have the holes from the original part that will be empty.
Great for passive cooling!! :P

Plus the Ultrabay won't be flush, it'll be recessed in, I don't know if that 15" extender for the ultrabay will fit in that if you were to try it, different sized mobos.
Also the HDD bay will be interesting, the frame would need to be cut for that as well I would assume.
I wonder though, if some of the USB boards near the ultrabay are swappable between units or if they'll even work.

But, I would take advice from ajkula66.
Strictly experimental if I were to try that.
