2102: detection error on HDD1 (ultrabay HDD)

Hi,

I'm receiving an error 2102: detection error on HDD1 (ultrabay HDD) at boot. I have purchased a cheap (Non-Genuine) ultrabay hdd caddy to enable me to use a secondary drive but it refuses to work (BIOS doesn't read it!) and I cant find any concrete answers. I have tried a few things like try a different HDD (Both HDD's I tried are genuine OEM disks from thinkpads), tried my SSD, tried a jumper pin to force SATA I and still no luck. As my specs list am on a t61p with a SSD on a middleton bios (For whitelist + SATA II). I could revert to the stock bios to see if it's that but am certain it's not. I have also considered flashing the HDD with Thinkpad firmware but I only have access to USB memory sticks and not CD-R(s) at the moment. :(

I have installed the disk correctly, am certain but I hope I haven't as this is annoying becuase it's new.

My only real theory is that the ultrabay is faulty but I can conclude that later in the week with my x61 + dock.

Any suggestions?,
Thanks.

Well just so you know it's the ultrabay caddy itself.

Hi fraserh,

I'm getting the same error after putting my HDD Hitachi 7k500-500 7200RPM SATA 3.0 Gb/s into an utlrabay caddy. I bought the caddy from a respected forum user and it is genuine Lenovo one.

It worked only once when my SSD was still having no OS on it and I just tested whether the old HDD will run from the ultrabay. It did work and I moved on with installing dual boot, while having the CD/DVD back for installation. In the end when both OS were running ok, I removed the CD/DVD and inserted the utlrabay caddy with the old HDD.

Suprisingly I got the 2102: detection error....
I read that some users reduced the SATA speed to 1.5 Gb/s from 3.0 and solved similar errors. In fact 1.5 Gb/s is written on the ultrabay adapter, but I do not know where to set SATA speed to 1.5 for the HDD1 and try whether it will work.

Anyway some feedback or suggestions are warmly welcomed.
