Swap CPU chip?

#1 Post by Olwe » Mon Jun 16, 2014 3:16 pm

I've got a T61 6463-4YU and a T61 7665-11U. Can I take the CPU chip out of the 6463 and put it in the 7665-11U? I admit, going from 1.8 to 2.0GHz isn't much, but anyway. . . .

It really is an easy swap. Print out a copy of the service manual, have a clean work surface and a white piece of paper for taking notes handy. I like to have a couple of really small magnets laying about to help with wrangling the teeny, tiny screws after they are removed. Take your time and avoid distractions. I've been glad that I did both the RAM as well as the processor upgrades on my machines. Good luck.

It's an easy upgrade to do. Make sure you have some new thermal paste and you clean the HSF and CPU die's nicely before applying the paste.

Don't expect much, if any, performance upgrade from such a minor upgrade.
