I have a T61 that seems to spontaneously go into a hibernation a few minutes after turn on. The screen goes black and the "Z" icon lights up. If I close the lid wait a few minutes then lift it returns to the last thing I saw on the screen. Could anyone tell me what is wrong and what to do about it?
Thank you.

Your Thinkpad don't go to sleep (hibernate)
"(Z)" icon means "working"
rightmost moon-like "c" icon means going to sleep or hibernate.
When in hibernate moonlike icon lights on with battery and may be plug, "(Z)" must be off
When it is going to sleep moonlike icon flashes when memory writes to HDD and then all icons goes off.
May be your screen switches off - test windows options and PowerManager / BIOS options for for screen blanking time.
BTW. How bright is your screen. Heavily worn lamp (which starts up with purple light) can do this things. When it heats up light become yellow or even white, but sometime it can switch off and wait for cool down.

You have that backwards, hibernate is save RAM to disk and power off, sleep is low power state.
