Hello,

Joined this forum in search of Frankpads. Seems to be rare.

Anyway my T60p (not a Frankenpad) has a failed fan. I contacted Lenovo Australia/NZ, they accepted my payment (109NZD) and are now trying to figure out where to procure it from and have no clue of an ETA. Literally. Anyway, my tug of war is still on. Does anyone here have a fan for the T60p (15 inch) (FRU: 41W6406)? And how much would it cost including shipping to New Zealand?

Currently on a T60p with the 15 inch UXGA IPS, an X60s and a T42 with SXGA+ IPS. Have had a 600E, R40e, and R52. As is everyone else here, hoping that the T1 and W1 are real.

I have had a good experience with IBM India and my machines were under an AMC till I got to NZ. Any tips on which is the best email id to complain regarding Lenovo service?

First, I'm a bit surprised about what you say; that your T60p has a 41W6406 fan... since T60p's always ("by definition"!) have discrete graphics, and according to System service parts - ThinkPad T60, T60p standard screen (4:3 format LCD) the 41W6406 is there listed as a "Thermal device and fan (Integrated)" hence not intended/suitable for a T60p!

If of interest, try search this forum for 41W6406 and see what people recommend as a replacement. Also, you might want to see the threads New methods to reduce the fan noise in a T60 or in a T60p and My Frankenpad Conversion and Heat Sink Mods [+PICS] and Frankenpad T60/61 cooling question - and there are even more of these threads/conversion suggestions!

A particular interesting guide as how to fan-noise can be reduced in e.g. T60's is found in [GUIDE] Make your T60 with ATI run *cool*

If you nevertheless end up wanting a 41W6406 then you may get it quite cheap at eBay... see e.g. this one, original IBM (but notice the outrageous shipping cost of this one!!).

The T1 and W1 are rumored Halo ThinkPads that loosely resemble the T540p but (probably) much thinner and lighter (no DVD burner) and with a 3:2 aspect ratio display. (2560x1700) It also has dedicated trackpoint buttons but since all next-gen ThinkPads will have that it's nothing special.

Johan, your point is valid. I did check the list and that part comes under Integrated and not Discrete. This is surprising, as having given my model name, serial number and machine type, 41W6406 is the number Lenovo mentioned in the quotation. Anyway, after a lot of phone calls and emails, I finally got the fan today. And the box says 41W6406. I have had this machine with me since 2008, and it is without doubt a T60p with discrete graphics.

You think Lenovo just gave me a 41W6406 instead of a 41W6407 or a 41V9932? Being new to New Zealand, I did not want to risk it, and thought I should approach Lenovo even if it was more expensive. But if they have short-changed me with an integrated fan for a discrete machine, I do foresee some issues. Like you said, the 41w6406 clearly does not support a T60p, and yet that is exactly what Lenovo Aus/NZ has sent me.

And thank you for your inputs Aurora. Yes, I am looking forward to a Thinkpad with a normal keyboard and 3:2 screen with trackpoint buttons. My T60p has served me well, but with parts getting rare, and Lenovo themselves trying to short-change on old parts, don't know how long I can continue with it.

I have indeed been given a different fan. My old fan has two patches at the bottom right (presumably for discrete cooling). And the new one has only one.

Yep. I would not use the new fan. It will keep your GPU without cooling. Since you already paid for it - call Lenovo and demand a correct part number. 41W6407 or 41V9932 should do fine.

Really? If you have a look in this post it seems to me as if "the small" fan actually is also cooling the GPU (although this small fan/heatpipe is probably inadequate for the discrete T60p GPU). A random image of how a good T60p fan/heatpipe should look is here.

I'd certainly also call Lenovo immediately and have them fix all problems; the fan as well as the damaged cable (the latter which will reduce the value of the laptop, should you at a later date wish to sell it).

PS; sriram00: Try make a Parts Lookup and see what specific parts came with your T60p when it left the factory! Have a look in the thread Why does Lenovo's "Parts Lookup" site not (always) work?? about how to do this. The fan may, or may not, be listed there.

Both of these are in fact the same picture, and it shows the discrete GPU version of the fan, so not sure what you can learn from that. Based on the pictures of the fans, the integrated version fan is lacking the extra plate to make contact with the GPU, thus it will not provide adequate cooling.

You know, there was never a consensus on this. Some have made the claim that the newer 41W6407 is better for CPU cooling, but worse for GPU cooling, because of the modified design, that causes the CPU heatpipe to extend to both fan openings, thus leaving the GPU heatpipe without direct contact with outside air.

I have had 41V9932 before, and have 41W6407 now, and found both adequate, although GPU temps may be a bit higher now than before. However, I have an X1400, which is not quite as hot as the V5200...

This is to inform you that Lenovo finally replaced the wrong fan for my T60p. I had to use some journalism contacts and get in touch with upper management to get this sorted. However, it worked, and the fan was replaced on-site. Ideally, as a consumer you should not have to do all this, but as I wasn't willing to let customer support sit on my money.

My thanks especially to Johan, Aurora, dr_st and George for answering all my queries through this forum, through PMs and even taking the trouble for it over email.

Was very keen on a Frankenpadding my T60p, but the shipping and customs to and fro between NZ-USA seem too prohibitive for now. Maybe sometime soon.

I was actually digging into a lot of the archive threads about 41W6407 vs 41V9932. It seems that 41V9932 is actually more effective at cooling the hot ATI GPU due to the longer heatpipe (and the fact it has its own vent). 41W6407 is more essential if you run a hotter 64-bit CPU as opposed to the older 32-bit yonahs which helps cool the hotter CPU but sacrifices the ATI GPU a bit.

Since I have both heatsinks I might do a thorough test on them both to compare once and for all (since I could not find someone who tried both in the same laptop with a yonah for better tracking).
