Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
In an attempt to get rid of various malware, viri, etc... it seems I wiped out my wireless. Signal strength is great, but 'limited or no connectivity'
I've tried reinstalling various drivers, but... heck, if it's got signal, I figure the driver must be okay?
There is a yellow triangle exclamation showing over the wireless icon.
Thoughts? Wits end here....
type 1952-AP2 should that matter
Thanks so much!

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Duh...you have that atrocity called Intel 3945ABG in there, combined with XP...good luck because you'll need it.
The latest driver can be found here:
http://download.lenovo.com/ibmdl/pub/pc ... w217ww.exe
Prior to installing it I'd wipe any traces of previous Intel drivers and keep my fingers crossed...
Keep us posted, pretty please...

Gotta say, this cracked me upajkula66 wrote:Duh...you have that atrocity called Intel 3945ABG in there, combined with XP...good luck because you'll need it.
That said, unfortunately, no joy. Uninstalled everything, re-installed everything. Same [censored] thing.
Tried to 'repair' (after several uninstall/reinstall steps)... :
Windows could not finish repairing the problem because the following action cannot be completed: Renewing your IP address"
Seems my poor computer isn't being assigned an IP Addy... ?
Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Maybe your winsock or TCP/IP stack is corrupt.
I would try to reset it.
A quick google search let me here.
Resetting has worked for me more than once.

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Well drat... that sounded and looked so promising, Brad.. Thank you!
But, alas, no luck. I tried the winsock repair you linked to, as well as one from windows. Also tried various TCP/IP resets.
Typing the netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt in command prompt makes the little exclamation point go away and says I've got great connection, but it lies. Still no internet. And, as soon as I restart computer, back to where I started.
Tried to get on wired network, and it shows an exclamation point too.. limited or no connectivity. "click on message for details" shows what is seen in picture.. So, I'm thinking it's nothing to do with the wireless, rather, it's an IP issue..?

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Hi, yep. My backup T60 (oh so slow) and my wife's Mac both are fine on the wireless without problems..
Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Hmm... Indeed it seems that something is heavily wrong with the networking components of your operating system.
I would try a Linux LiveCD on that machine, to be doubly sure that it's OS and not hardware issue.

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
One handy little thing I do have going for me here is my backup T60, which has the same hardware, same OS. So can compare.
Results of ip config /all shown below.. Top image the non-connecting computer, lower one is the working, connected computer. Non working unit is showing nothing for default gateway, a seemingly bad autoconfig IP (router is 192.168.*.*), and nothing for DHCP and DNS servers...
Does that just mean it's not connected? Or could there be clues in these pictures?

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
It means that from some reason it fails to communicate with your router and pull an IP.
Is the DHCP client service enabled (check services.msc).
Also - try going to TCP/IP settings of the network adapter, and assigning a manual IP/default gateway in the router's range (one that does not conflict with existing devices - for example 192.168.1.26). One you get that - can you PING the router? Do you have internet?

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Thanks..I will try that in a sec. Firstly, sorry for the img too large. Thank you, MOD, for just making that a link.
Only problem with a fixed IP, if it works, is that I'd think it would only work from this location. Which would be a great start, but not for travelling.
Yes on internet... I've been following this thread on location from a working computer, same network.

It's more for diagnosis, than as a permanent solution.VolvoMatt wrote:Only problem with a fixed IP, if it works, is that I'd think it would only work from this location. Which would be a great start, but not for travelling.

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
DHCP client is started, automatic mode
I can't find where to set a static IP.
What about the 17 step fix here, which involves deleting Winsock, which seems to be the problem...?

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Maybe it will help, I have no idea because I have never tried it myself.
To set manual IP - look at screenshot #10 in your link (network connection properties), find TCP/IP and click "properties".

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Really appreciate your time in attempt to help!
Did fine where I can set IP address, set manually within parameters per your suggestion. As well as subnet mask, default gateway, and preferred DNS server.
That got rid of the exclamation point on the wireless icon; it says its connected as it should. And my manual settings hold through a shut down/restart.
But still no internet.
Having to get some work done last night, and not wanting to have to work on my slow backup machine, I swapped hard drives. The problem followed the hard drive, so.. definitely not a hardware issue.
Guess I might have to get drastic....

Re: Just going nuts. Trying to restore wireless
Can you temporarily swap hard drives between your regular and backup machines? If it now works, you've proven it to be a software issue rather than a Thinkpad issue.
